Today is the 24th of October.

It’s Black History Month in the U.K.

I love Black History Month.

I love Black History.

Love it.

Love it.

Love it.

Love it even more when certain people question why it deserves to celebrated.

When I was younger they told us Black History Month was about the ending of slavery.

We were taught about Martin Luther King and the dream he had.

It started and ended there.

Allegedly.

It’s a different story for the Black Children of today though.

Thank God.

Just like our kinfolk in the United States, we have contributed so much to this great country but are the least recognised.

Never made sense to me. Ever. Shame.

Still, we rise.

Ten years ago Solange Knowles released the monumental ‘A Seat at the Table’ who remembers?

I almost forgot, until Okiki reminded me.

Thank you Okiki.

What a great album. Forever relevant.

Anyway, Happy Black History Month to those celebrating.

There’s so much to celebrate.

I love being Black British.

I love being Black.

Love it.

Love it.

Love it.

See you in a month.

#InTheNews: Thank you Harper’s Bazaar (@harpersbazaarus)for celebrating this amazing moment. On Monday, Sade Lythcott (@sade1111), NBT’s CEO, was awarded the prestigious Marian MacDowell Arts Advocacy Award in recognition of her leadership at National Black Theatre [NBT] that has championed Black artists for decades. We are so grateful to The MacDowell Foundation (@macdowell1907) for honoring her, NBT, and for hosting such a stellar ceremony. The night was an amazing moment of bringing so many of our community members together and along side her award, Sharron Washington (@thisissharonwashington) received MacDowell Fellow.

link to whole article is in our bio.

The must-see gallery shows this fall in California.

@johnbaldessarifamilyfoundation’s playful experiments with scale and space take over Sprüth Magers, while the @academymuseum explores more than a century of horror movies through six immersive chambers. Elsewhere, @GlennLigon’s coloring book works come together for the first time in 25 years, K-Pop star @rkive of BTS fame offers a window into his personal collection at @sfmoma, and Richard Phillips returns to celebrity portraiture.

Glenn Ligon: Double America
By Charles Moore
For Brooklyn Rail

American conceptual artist Glenn Ligon’s (b. 1960) Double America takes longer to read than it should. The 2012 work features ten feet of neon, with two rows of the word “AMERICA,” one stacked above the other. On top, it’s lit in white, every letter turned backward; below, dark tubing forms an upside-down reflection of the same word, each overturned letter facing the right direction. Ligon has stated that the piece bears a shadow of sorts, with said shadow not quite echoing the word that casts it. This is the entire piece, and it represents a sharp idea: a shadow is meant to be a faithful index, just darker. And this one lies…………..— Charles Moore

Feeling so lucky that the @counterpublic 2026 Triennial: “Coyote Time” aligned with my St. Louis conference this past week. The various exhibition sites provided beautiful and haunting destinations for my first trip to this unusual city. I’m still recovering from the Tony Cokes “TT The River Won’t Stop (or, A Stomping Horse)” installation at Antioch Baptist Church which legitimately changed me, and catching @wonjulimstudio’s “Parasiting” was such a gift (shout out @devinwilsonstudio). Other favorite moments and a million shots of The Arch coming in hot.

Having just taken delivery of the new @dean_sameshima book from @neuer.aachener.kunstverein, I'm redeveloping the paper I gave during the IAWIS conference at the University of Amsterdam this summer, taking an analysis of his textual work alongside pieces by @glennligon and Felix Gonzalez-Torres into a new piece for another upcoming conference in Italy. My paper will be part of CIRQUE's "Becoming Visible: The Challenges of Queer Legibility in Visual Arts and Cultures" at the University of Pisa in December. This research on textual abstractions and the queering of language helps to me contextualise my own painting, performance and writing practice, and I hope will spark lots of interesting conversations and questions in the coming months.
I'm currently self-funding this process for now, including my travel there, so any help is greatly welcomed - remember I have a number of paintings on sale at the moment (see my previous post) that can feed back into this. Please just message me if you're interested in anything 🌈
