Climate Shelters for Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Berlin

In a district with dense housing and limited natural shade, several public squares and courtyards have been transformed into climate shelters to reduce the impact of heatwaves.

As part of the “Nachhaltige Erneuerung” programme, run by degewo, the Berlin Senate, and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office, our Persol pergola has been installed on playgrounds and sports facilities across the neighbourhood. Featuring an aluminium structure and a slatted roof, the design was developed in collaboration with landscape architects Bacher Landschaftsarchitekten.

A cable system for climbing plants will gradually add a further layer of natural shade over time.

The result: cooler, more resilient outdoor spaces that also work as places for the community to meet.

Real design. Real conversations.

Thank you, @monicaforsterdesignstudio, for your trust and for accepting our invitation to bring FORM & ADVENTURE to Berlin.

Thank you to everyone who visited, joined the conversation, and spent time with the work during @berlindesignweek.

Special thanks to the participating Swedish brands @fogiacollection @ogeborg @smddesign @orrefors as well as to @swebotschaft and @svenska_kulturraden for their generous support.

A wonderful collaboration and a beautiful reminder that design is ultimately about people.

Softness-Overload! 🖤
