The brief was simple: make room for all the grandchildren.

We added an 18-by-18-foot bunkroom to this weekend house in Orient, New York, with four sleeping areas, a desk, built-in storage, and a place to watch movies and play video games. Finished in light oak and charcoal with a pop of bumblebee yellow.

14 Saint Lukes Place - The longer I spent in this restored 1852 Italianate townhouse, the more I noticed the kinds of decisions that rarely announce themselves. Every intervention felt deeply respectful of the home’s history, allowing nearly two centuries of craftsmanship to coexist effortlessly with contemporary living.

Every piece, every material, every object felt like it belonged exactly where it was. I kept catching myself seeing familiar things in entirely new ways. A single chair. A stack of books. The relationship between a table, a sculpture, and a window.

It wasn’t just the objects themselves that felt extraordinary, but the thoughtfulness behind where they lived, and how they responded to the architecture around them. The original architecture never felt like a backdrop; it was part of the conversation. Restored details, collected objects, and contemporary interventions all existed in dialogue with one another, each making the other more compelling. Every room became a lesson in restraint, balance, and the art of curation.

Spending time here felt like a privilege. I left with a renewed appreciation for the idea that the most memorable homes aren’t designed all at once. They’re patiently restored, thoughtfully collected, and deeply lived in.
