Remembering Spencer Clark
I left from Texas about 4:30am. And what I have to explain is surreal. The weather looked like it was going to rain. I laid the built cross on Broxton car and wrapped it in blankets as a symbol of “Still Riding,” on the race car. The minute I crossed into New Mexico things changed. Fog out of nowhere super thick for 15 miles, could barely see. Then out of nowhere daylight. It was as if was a veil. A train was riding along next to me and it kept saying “The One.” Then I kept looking at the mile markers and resetting my odometer to pace off where 212 might be and then sure enough it was there. The mile marker had been replaced, while in Atlanta. I prayed to the Lord before arriving to let me know where to place the cross on the median and I was stopped in my tracks. I saw another cross before me, and thought it was for Spencer. But it wasn’t it was for another lady back from 1970. As I unpacked all the materials I needed to install the cross, I could not cross the highway. Semi truck and car after car would keep coming. Then I saw a small hill side above the existing cross below. I walked up and knew this was the place. I just felt it. I dig a 2 foot hole placed the cross in the hole and packed it nicely, then out of nowhere I heard a roar and turned around and could barely take a photo of what I saw. Over 80 semi trucks side by side driving towards Texas all the same. I never seen anything like it, didn’t look real. It felt like NASCAR haulers driving bye as a salute to Spencer. It didn’t make since. I started repainting the white cross one more time and called TJ to talk about everything. Along with a personal gift of a race car that was the same on the cross. Broxton my son will give this to TJ. As I finished my prayer I took a look around I videoed where I was for TJ and his family. The sun got brighter over the cross, not a cloud was blocking the sunlight and I knew again this was the spot overlooking the highway from both sides. All I can say is I’m grateful it’s back up again for TJ and his family and friends, along for GMS and Jon Christensen. Spencer I never met, but I felt your spirit #23
God Bless Stay safe

REMEMBERING SPENCER CLARK

This is a very emotional and difficult post for me.

If I tagged you, you will understand why. And if there are others who should be tagged, please let me know.

As I drove to Atlanta for the Bandolero Nationals, I asked my friend TJ Clark where his son Spencer’s memorial was along I-40 in New Mexico. TJ told me the mile marker was gone and that it was somewhere around Mile Marker 212 going East on I-40
I drove right past it and saw nothing.

TJ later explained that when the highway median is groomed, the equipment has sometimes hit or removed the memorial for his son, Spencer Clark, who TJ lost in 2006.

That bothered me the entire drive to Atlanta.

Now, on my way home, with about 900 miles still ahead of me, I stopped near the New Mexico–Texas border.

I had told TJ that if I came back through and could find the location, I would build a cross.

TJ, being a father told me, “Buddy, just go home to your family. It’s okay.”

But to me, it wasn’t okay.

TJ looks after my son. Him and Broxton have a bond that means more to me than I can explain.

TJ is family. His boy is my boy, and my boys are his boys.

So I needed to look after his son.

I built this cross myself at a busy truck stop, overlooking a farm field. Trucks were everywhere, people coming and going, yet somehow I was completely alone building the cross.
It was cloudy and about to rain.
Then, as I started building the cross, the sun came out.

A several hours later, I finished.

“Still Riding” is on the cross because those words mean something to us in the fire service. We leave no one behind. We carry that same belief with us on our race cars.

“Ring of Fire,” one of Spencer’s favorite songs.

Tomorrow, I’ll place this cross for Spencer.

I know TJ and his wife miss their son more than anything.

This isn’t about replacing what was there.

It’s about making sure Spencer is not forgotten.

If you ever drive East on I-40 through New Mexico and see this cross, please let TJ know.

And if someday it’s gone, we’ll make another one.

Because we don’t leave our own behind.

Still Riding, Spencer. 🖤

I’ve been racing at @fmspeedway since the 90s. It’s such a special place. We had a lot of fun and finished P2 in the PLMs. I appreciate all the hard work from Tony Eury Jr and @gmsracingllc turning this car around in two weeks.
