Siempre el mar. For “Poems Can Be Actions” in New York, I presented Song of the Sea, a film installation and performance, stepping into the sea.

The installation remained open throughout the day, inviting others to enter the image and interpret a written score inspired by the teachings of a 13th-century Kabbalist. A moment to spend with the ocean, to ask, listen, and receive.

Thank you to Maria @desnivelgallery for the invitation, @gmtc.nyc for hosting, and everyone who stepped into the sea with me.

From time to time I do a live performance and without exception am reminded that’s when I feel most alive in my practice. Sewing, in the past, was a tremendously important income stream, it was labor that I could do from home when my son was young and childcare unaffordable. It’s now an important part of my sculptural practice. So the mechanics and movement are familiar and have an imprinted body memory. Thank you to Maria @desnivelgallery for inviting me and @gmtc.nyc for hosting a day long marathon of performances!

I made a piece as part of @gmtc.nyc’s programming at 𝐹𝒾𝓈𝒽 𝒾𝓃 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝒩𝑒𝓉, 2026: 𝐿𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉, at @sheerlytouchyawarehouse, on view from Oct 24 to Feb 2027, 74-12 88th St, Queens, NY.

The set arranges a resting place in the warehouse, considering the body in its daily practice: In a world where we are worked to our exhaustion, sleep is the day’s ultimate fall. Labor, consciousness, and subjective experience are put on hold. It is a time when the body is only loyal to itself, a necessary reclaiming of its own, an inescapable return to itself.

Red lighting emits lure, privacy, and dread. When the flirtation fades, the color red is simply the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum, and the least stimulating to the circadian receptors in human eyes.

It is, in other words, a light to rest under. So come take a nap at the warehouse, and I’ll see you at the opening🏮🛌

Mandarin Express presents Site of Extraction, a performance by artist Fei Liu @binaricorn , hosted by gmtc - golden monkey trading company 金猿商社 @gmtc.nyc , as part of our public program series.

Site of Extraction is a research and performance art project which documents the artist’s participation in extractive systems and marginalized labor in order to collect capital for her mutual aid art practice. This presentation results from first-hand experience of the phenomena of the United States blood plasma donation industry, and makes a parallel between performance and the act of perforation, and interrogates how these systems are reframed when nonparticipation is a privilege.

🗓 Saturday, October 31, 5 – 7 PM
📍 gmtc - golden monkey trading company 金猿商社, 210 Canal St, RM310, New York, NY, 10013
🎟 Tickets via link in bio.

About the artist

Fei Liu 刘斐 is a New York-based Chinese artist, designer, and educator whose work moves between socially engaged art practices, mutual aid, performance, and the politics of embodied labor. Her projects place her own body inside of, or adjacent to, extractive systems to investigate who bears physical risk and who profits from it. Earlier work investigated how technological systems attempt to replicate and automate care, and what passes as companionship. She is a product designer at The Intercept and an adjunct professor at Parsons MFA Design & Technology. Previous residencies and grants include Brooklyn Arts Council, ONASSIS USA, Pioneer Works, New Museum, NEW INC, and Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for POEMS CAN BE ACTIONS. And to all the artists and poets who shared their work, gestures, voices, and ways of being with us, thank you for making this day magic.

A very special thank you to gmtc – golden monkey trading company 金猿商社 for opening their doors to all of us with such trust and generosity. For creating a space where work could be realized without the pressure to produce anything beyond the action itself.

Independent spaces like these matter. Places that understand the value of gathering, and of allowing art to exist beyond expectation, outcome, or the need to produce something tangible✨💛

Belated, belated posting… With my heart still missing NYC, from Amsterdam… (For those who don’t know... yes, i am out from nyc for now. But i will go back!) Whoooaa time is just evaporating!

The exhibition Bills and Wills in June & July at AHL Foundation @ahlfoundation could go smooth for whole journey due to all the participants and friends with tons of love and support. Public program <How Much Would You Pay> at gmtc @gmtc.nyc was the event that I’ve been wanted to do, open discussion about breaking down the artistic labor with the artists and audiecnes, so I appreciate a lot about giving me space and time for the opportunity, alongside the artists who put beautiful labor that cannot be actually hard to value in numbers, for offering their babies to be on the table for discussion.

This focus on monetization of art labor and practices, a corelation of conceptualization and commodification of curatorship and building a temporal infrastructure of community are still ongoing through my short enough 3 months fellowship in de Appel @de_appel with their fascinating archives. I am researching on how contemporary artists and institutions have engaged with critiques of artistic labor and the fragmented monetization of cultural production across different periods, from a performance in 1977 and an exhibition in 2009 to ongoing public programs in de Appel.

I miss my friends, my stuffs in storage, smelly subways with cute rat families, thoughtful boomboxes, streets and parks etc etc so much. But days like calm canals with little quivers by waving willow trees in Amsterdam have been very thankful. Therefore, I will post other belated stuffs…

POEMS CAN BE ACTIONS
Sunday, October 11 · 10AM–8PM

How can poetry be encountered?
What if a poem is not only something we read, but something that happens between us?

For one day at gmtc - golden monkey trading company 金猿商社, poets and artists will explore poetry beyond the page through gesture, movement, voice, sound, instruction, and exchange.

There is no fixed stage and no single way through the work. Visitors are invited to watch, participate, or simply wander. Some works may announce themselves as poems. Others won’t.

POEMS CAN BE ACTIONS asks how poetry might enter our lives and what becomes possible when we encounter it differently.

Curated by DESNIVEL · Hosted by gmtc - golden monkey trading company 金猿商社
