. #AnnualChildrensParty #LittleTokyoBusinessAssociation #LittleTokyoLegacyFoundation #WorthyOfLove #HinoeumaGirl During the dance battles, I held one of 7-month-old twin boys. The moment he felt securely supported, he began jumping with all his strength, smiling nonstop! His tiny body was bursting with life, taking me back to being a new mother 27 years ago. At the end, adults formed a tunnel with their hands for the children to walk through. I went through too. This party says, “You matter. Your birthday is special. You are Worthy of Love.” Turning 60—kanreki, a year of rebirth—I wanted to experience those words myself. I was born a Hinoeuma (Fire Horse) girl, once considered undesirable because of an old Japanese superstition. The tunnel felt like a birth canal, with a renewed me emerging on the other side. The once-lively outdoor venue fell silent and we began cleaning. I realized that even if I would never walk Skid Row alone, there are many ways to offer support. I hope to join Wesley and Martha again!

UCLAのAsian Languages and Culturesで日本文学のPh.D. Young Creator of the YEAR! . #AnnualChildrensParty #LittleTokyoBusinessAssociation #LittleTokyoLegacyFoundation #WorthyOfLove #BandoHirohichiro After J-Town Taiko Club, Bando Ryu master Bando Hirohichiro taught “Baseball Ondo”—perfect for LA, home of the Dodgers! First-time Bon Odori dancers joined adults, enjoying the batting and throwing gestures. I met Bando Sensei when we happened to sit together at the Nisei Week Pioneer Spirit Luncheon. An Assistant Professor of Asian Studies at CSUSB, he earned his Ph.D. in Japanese literature at UCLA, and was a Fulbright Scholar at Waseda and the University of Tokyo. In Kabuki, he studied under Living National Treasure Sakata Tōjūrō IV and received the stage name Nakamura Gankyō. I look forward to his Oct. 24 performance in “Kabuki in Motion: The Lion Returns” at The Huntington! Worthy of Love co-founder Mary “Mandie” Davis energized the children! A Pokémon artwork was unveiled, and a boy was honored by Young Creators Club as the 1 Young Creator of the Year. As darkness fell, adults and children formed a circle and held hands, making the lights glow. Seeing that joining hands creates light was simple, beautiful, and a powerful message of connection.
