Lloyd Corrigan (1900 – 1969) was a multi-talented American film and television actor, producer, screenwriter, and director whose prolific career began during the silent era of the 1920s. The son of actress Lillian Elliott, Corrigan initially made his mark behind the camera writing and directing cinematic mysteries, most notably helming Daughter of the Dragon starring Anna May Wong as part of a classic Fu Manchu trilogy. His early prowess as a filmmaker earned his short film La Cucaracha an Academy Award in 1935, but by 1938 he shifted his focus heavily toward on-screen performance, solidifying his legacy as a highly recognizable and beloved character actor.

Howard William Wookey (1895 – 1970) was a skilled twentieth-century American artist and illustrator closely tied to the commercial and fine art circles of Southern California. Renowned for his meticulous drafting abilities, Wookey often utilized fine pen, ink, and watercolor washes to bring dramatic, narrative compositions to life, such as his celebrated 1934 cinematic poster illustration for the movie Treasure Island. His contribution to this bookplate is defined by his signature attention to depth and detail, capturing a sweeping, grand theatrical backdrop framed within an incredibly dense, stylized floral border.

Jeffrey Mayer Selznick (1932–1997). Born into cinema royalty, Jeffrey was the son of Gone with the Wind producer David O. Selznick and Irene Gladys Mayer, and the grandson of MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer.

The small “HR” monogram in the top right belongs to Hugo Cecil Levinge Rumbold (1884–1932), a brilliant British theatrical scenery and costume designer. Rumbold married elite screenwriter Zoe Akins in 1932, embedding him in Hollywood’s inner circle. Since Jeffrey was born in March 1932 and Rumbold passed away that November, this crowned seahorse was likely a unique birth gift designed during the artist’s final months. While Rumbold is the sole credited artist, the exact artisan who cut the physical printing plate remains a mystery. In this era, designers either hand-etched the plates themselves or worked closely with commercial print houses. Because Rumbold’s “HR” mark stands alone, he claims full artistic creation. #Bookplate #ExLibris #JeffreyMayerSelznick #DavidOSelznick #hugorumbold

A treasure from the Golden Age, this oversized, hand-tooled leather bookplate belonged to none other than George Brent (1899–1979). While most bookplates are simple paper labels, Brent, a top leading man at Warner Bros. known for his 11-film partnership with Bette Davis, opted for pure craftsmanship.

The plate features a striking schooner motif embossed in rich, pebbled leather, a nod to Brent’s well-known passion for the sea and sailing. Pieces like this were custom-commissioned from master bookbinders to be inset into the inner covers of large, fine-bound volumes. #GeorgeBrent #OldHollywoodStyle #BookplateCollector #ExLibris #LeatherWork

Kenneth More and Susannah York in “The Greengage Summer” (also known as Loss of Innocence) (1961)

More later named this film among his favourites, stating, “[Susannah York] was just twenty-one and an adorable creature... it was one of the happiest films on which I have ever worked” ✨

dorothy dandrige and sammy davis jr at the premiere for porgy and bess (1959)

although the film itself was controversial, with many saying it perpetuated negative stereotypes, it is important to note that it is one of the first examples of a main stream movie premiere where black actors were allowed to attend. due to segregation laws throughout the united states black actors were rarely allowed to attend premieres and all black casted films did not have big media roll outs. despite the controversy, having footage of this kind from the 1940s/50s (especially of this quality) is rare.
