In the caverns of Andersen Library, buried crypt-like under 82-feet of earth and limestone, there lies the last testaments of thousand of lives, the Archives and Special Collections (ASC).

ASC’s newest exhibit at the University of Minnesota Libraries, “Unburied: Death and Mourning in the Archives,” is a meditation on the everyday experiences of death, experiences that were once an omnipresent feature of our lives, but today are kept at a distance. “Unburied” is also unique in that it takes a broad cross-collection view from 14 different units at ASC, and includes materials from the Goldstein Museum of Design Collection, the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine, and the Andersen Horticultural Library.

Read the full story by Adria Carpenter at the link in bio, and visit the exhibit now through Jan. 29, 2027 at Elmer L. Andersen Library. Please note that Elmer L. Andersen Library currently requires a U Card for entry. If you do not have a U Card, please call 612-624-7469 upon your arrival to be let into the building.

✨ 🪩✨ Stopped by the @goldstein_museum today to check out “SEQUINS- Flash and Substance”. Haven’t decided which was my favorite, and need to go back as I didn’t really shoot much of my 2 pieces. Possibly the pink flapper, the blue Pat Sandler and the Mexican skirt. Be sure to check the show out. Thank you @aidan_oconnor for the tour and @animalvintage for coming with!

My sister from another mister (she got the superduper hair) is a sequin fiend—so naturally she was my date last night at the exhibition opening at the Goldstein Museum of Design! Not pictured: the Pacificos, guac and chips that followed. Love ya, Gail 😘

I’m deeply proud to be a Goldstein Museum board member. Tonight’s opening of its latest exhibition, “Sequins,” is testament to the staff’s incredible curatorial eye and the power of the museum’s archive to bring an incredible story of design to life. Just gorgeous. Visit the exhibition yourself at McNeal Hall, University of Minnesota. Huge congratulations, Jean, Aidan, and the entire staff!

Continuing our mission to expand access and education, Grainline is partnering with The Goldstein Museum @goldstein_museum at The University of Minnesota @umndesign on Grainline’s Archive Study program.

Archive Study is a recurring program where we dive into the life, work, and philosophy of significant figures in fashion.

For our inaugural session, we began looking into American fashion pioneer Ralph Lauren. For the second part of our study, Grainline’s Workroom members will gather at the Goldstein Museum, where we will be guided through a curated collection of historic Ralph Lauren garments by the museum’s curator

Goldstein Museum Director @goldstein_museum Aidan O'Connor is moderating College of Design @umndesign faculty speakers Jessica Rossi-Mastracci, Seiji Ikeda, Bill Moran, and Quynh Akers at the American Craft Council @craftcouncil Connects Conference. Catch their panel discussion at 1:00 PM on Saturday, Sept 5 at McNamara Alumni Center. See our links for full event info!

What is the role of craft at an R1 university amidst the digital transformation of higher education? This session is convened by the Goldstein Museum of Design, an academic museum at the University of Minnesota that embraces the handmade in its collecting, interpretation, and exhibiting of designed objects.

College of Design faculty from Landscape Architecture, Graphic Design, and Product Design will present craft-driven approaches to teaching, research, and professional practice. With diverse experiences including rammed-earth fabrication, letterpress printing, hand-drawn kamon (Japanese family crests), and handmade glass production, the panel will reveal shared values around thinking with materials, modeling/prototyping, and slow manufacturing.

Happy half-century, @goldsteinmuseum! As Board President, I cannot wait for the festivities ahead. ❤️ If fashion x female pedagogy feed your soul, 2 weeks from tonight (aka 9/10) you’re at GMD’s reception for “Sequins: Flash and Substance”—free + open to the public.

IYKYK why this is the perfect first party of this momentous year. GMD is the only design museum in the Upper Midwest + the region’s premier fashion & costume archive. Director @aidan_oconnor + curator @jeanelizmn seized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spotlight the permanent collection’s most dazzling treasures and let them SHINE. Guests, as you can see from press pics from the 1st opening gala in 1976, dress for the occasion. (And note the museum’s big bash is May 2027). ✨⭐️✨

YOU MUST KNOW: GMD’s namesake sisters, University of Minnesota professors Harriet & Vetta Goldstein, were revolutionaries who forever shaped design theory, most notably through their 1925 book “Art in Everyday Life.”

Their radical idea: design is a universal language for living, not an exclusive luxury for the wealthy.

As proto-feminists, they examined & elevated objects of daily life as sources of beauty, insisting value and style not determined by cost, but by the quality and distinction of what we notice and choose to appreciate and acquire

I came to learn this firsthand as a student mentored by Bonnie Cashin—iconic fashion designer and subject of GMD’s first exhibition—who always told me, “Taste, not price, is the greatest leveler” and “Chic is where you find it.” The latter became the title of my book and guides everything I do in my personal life and as her heir.

After FGI MSP brought Bonnie in to launch GMD, a foundational collection of international haute couture, including Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Yves Saint Laurent was established.

The original goal? To “cull 200 garments” of the finest in fashion.

Today: 35,000+ objects, two-thirds textiles, costume and fashion—an extraordinary material legacy of women who carved out unprecedented space for design theory, carried forward through generations of scholars, collectors, and di

As newly-appointed @goldstein_museum Advisory Board President in GMD’s 50th anniversary year, it is my great honor to welcome every illustrious board member for 2026-27, together with Director @aidan_oconnor, Executive Office Specialist @cmillhone, and Vice President @xomissannalee.

Behind the scenes at GMD today, the planning begins to celebrate the legacy and contemporary leadership that defines and distinguishes GMD not only as the only design museum in the upper Midwest, but also as a radically advanced and accessible research center.

With over 35,000 objects (2/3 are historic textiles, costume, and fashion) and within the @umntwincities collective of premier arts and culture “front doors”—including the @weismanartmuseum, @bellmuseum, @mn_arboretum, @tweedmuseum and @glensheenmansion—GMD continues the mission and passion for “Art in Everyday Life” espoused by its namesake Goldstein sisters, Harriet and Vetta, U of M instructors credited with immeasurable impact on understanding the material culture of our world. They “changed the way Americans value design.”

In their words (1941), “Some of our chief concerns are to help people in these ways: to get pleasure from their surroundings; to appreciate the beauty that is all around in little things; grasses, dishes, as well as buildings; to have tolerance toward new ideas and other people’s points of view; and to look for what is good, not what is poor, in design.”

Thank you for every smile, laugh, clap, question and idea that furthers this vital and magnificent mission, @aslininayni, @bdesnick, @initheskini, @jahnapeloquin, @karenmorrismillinery, @kittyscratches, @lizgrdnr, @momotaro231, as we inaugurate this momentous year, starting with the highly-anticipated “Sequins” exhibition reception, the evening of September 10th. One celebratory year doesn’t seem like enough. ❤️
