CalTrans, SANDAG, and other bodies will have spent $6.5 billion over 40 years to widen interstate 5 between La Jolla and Oceanside, but didn't bother working with NCTD and Amtrak whose trains are falling into the ocean. Want to save money? Get cars off the roads, have fewer lanes, and invest in transit. It's not like every other functional country on earth does this.

Happy National Train Day! Today we celebrate more than two centuries of railroad history and the incredible machines that have connected cities, moved economies, and inspired generations of railfans.

From the steam giants of the 19th century to today’s sleek, fuel-efficient locomotives, trains have always represented progress. They helped build nations, opened the American West, and transformed travel by making long-distance journeys faster, safer, and more accessible.

In the United States, railroads remain an essential part of daily life. Freight carriers move everything from automobiles and grain to consumer goods and raw materials, while passenger services like Amtrak and commuter agencies keep millions of people connected each year. Iconic locomotives such as the EMD F40PH, GE P42DC, and Siemens Charger have each defined their own era of rail travel.

National Train Day is also a tribute to the people behind the scenes: engineers, conductors, dispatchers, maintenance crews, and station staff who keep the railroad moving safely every day. Their dedication ensures that every horn, every departure, and every arrival happens with precision.

For railfans, trains are more than transportation. They are living history, engineering marvels, and works of art in motion. Whether you’re trackside photographing a freight train, riding a long-distance route, or exploring a beautifully restored depot, there is something timeless about the sound of steel wheels on steel rails.

As someone who loves capturing transportation through photography and video, I’m grateful for the memories made at stations, along main lines, and aboard trains that continue to tell the story of America’s railroads.

The EMD F40PH has defined North American passenger rail for over 51 years, becoming the face of Amtrak through the late 20th century. Introduced on May 8, 1975 by Electro-Motive Division, it was built to replace a failing, inconsistent fleet with a standardized, durable locomotive.
Amtrak ordered 216 original F40PH units between 1976 and 1988, making it the railroad’s primary diesel passenger engine. Producing 3,000 horsepower from a 16-cylinder 645 engine, the F40PH used Head-End Power (HEP) to supply electricity to passenger cars. To maintain consistent electrical output, the engine ran at constant high RPM, giving the locomotive its signature loud, steady sound.
As production continued, multiple variants expanded the design. The F40PH-2 introduced improved electronics and reliability. The F40PHR program rebuilt older units with upgraded systems. The F40PHM-2, known for its wide “Winnebago” cab, served commuter agencies like Chicago’s Metra. Canada saw the F40PH-2C and later F40PH-3 and F40PH-3C rebuilds, modernizing units for extended service with operators like VIA Rail.
Additional rebuild programs across the U.S. upgraded aging fleets with new control systems and emissions improvements. Some retired units were converted into Non-Powered Control Units (NPCUs), or “cabbage cars,” retaining driving cabs and baggage space for push-pull service.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the F40PH was Amtrak’s backbone, hauling everything from long-distance trains to corridor services. Its reliability and ease of maintenance made it a favorite among crews and shops alike.
Though largely retired from primary Amtrak service by the early 2000s, many F40PH variants remain active in commuter service today. After 51 years, the F40PH endures as a symbol of rugged engineering and a defining icon of modern American passenger rail.

The Siemens Charger has, in just a decade, become the modern backbone of North American passenger rail, succeeding icons like the EMD F40PH and redefining efficiency, emissions, and reliability. Introduced in 2015 by Siemens Mobility, the Charger was designed to meet stricter EPA Tier 4 emissions standards while delivering strong performance for both corridor and long-distance service.

The first and most widespread variant, the SC-44, produces 4,400 horsepower and is used extensively by state-supported corridors and agencies across the U.S., including services operated by Amtrak. These locomotives quickly proved themselves with rapid acceleration, quieter operation, and improved fuel efficiency compared to older diesel fleets.

Building on that success, Siemens developed additional variants. The SCB-40 was tailored specifically for Amtrak’s long-distance trains, integrating larger fuel capacity and modifications for cross-country reliability. The ALC-42 further refined the platform as Amtrak’s primary long-distance locomotive, featuring upgraded systems, improved crash energy management, and a distinctive modern design that has become the new face of intercity rail.

For brighter, more sustainable operations, Siemens also introduced the dual-mode ALC-42E, capable of operating on both diesel power and overhead electric catenary. This allows seamless transitions in electrified territories such as the Northeast Corridor, reducing emissions in dense urban areas without requiring locomotive changes.

Beyond Amtrak, Chargers have been adopted by numerous commuter and regional agencies, demonstrating flexibility across service types. Their standardized design simplifies maintenance while maintaining high reliability under heavy daily use.

In just 10 years, the Charger family has reshaped expectations for passenger locomotives in North America. With continued production, expanding variants, and a focus on cleaner, more efficient travel, the Siemens Charger stands as a symbol of the industry’s forward momentum bridging the gap between traditional diesel power and a more sustainable rail future.
