What’s your why? A question I feel like I should have been asking myself more often. Putting aside the attention this weekend received, more importantly this event curated the fire in me again that had been missing... In my last few races, to be as vulnerable as possible, something wasn’t right. I felt that things got WAY too numerical and analytical, and my mind just wasn’t in the right place. My mindset going into this race, however was the polar opposite. I had been planning this for years….in 2018 I got my skydiving license just around the time I was training for my first 100 miler across the Florida keys at 22 years old…and came up with this crazy idea to eventually time my 100th jump with running 100 miles around a dropzone after hearing about how people did something special for their 100th. It was a long journey…I went uncurrent from jumping for 2 years to focus on putting myself through an accelerated nursing program where I pretty much had no life, but running. Shortly after getting my license recurrent this past summer, I had my first malfunction, causing me to cutaway my main parachute and pull my reserve at 2000 ft…it took me 2 months to jump again, I was terrified, my landings weren’t the best as I wasn’t jumping consistently (I really kept skydiving under the radar as I was working long overnights and running high volume weeks). Recently I also broke my nurse contract 10 weeks into orientation and switched specialties to child/adolescent psych, which is in my heart. Channeling everything I had overcome this year, I viewed this ultra as an overall celebration of resilience more than anything-and also being able to finally, and fully show what I was capable of. Accepting that to be successful in anything that you do, you will have to go through adversity, a bit of trial and error, and have respect, patience towards, and gain the maturity to accept the down moments and rearrange a few things-anyone who tells you differently or to give up after a few failures (or more) is in for a rude awakening. It is anything but continuous ups -and the down moments are what allow you to learn, reflect, heal, and grow-the periods in which you recreate your story.💜
