Tonio: “Big bro, can you slide me $25 really quickly? I got you by Friday.”

Me: “Absolutely NOT—not until you post the content I’ve been asking you to post for over a week.” 😂🤕

Artists often become more than clients to us as managers; they become family. Our roles can extend into being big brothers, father figures, psychologists, uncles, protectors, financiers, and mentors.

I had the honor of meeting the incredibly gifted Tonio Hall in 2019 while scouting for MTV’s Making the Band. I wanted to sign him badly, but I respected the role I had been brought on to fulfill. Tonio had to submit audition videos, and somehow, he would always send his to me around 5:00 a.m. (Why Tonio?!) LOL

After the show’s casting was halted, we lost contact. Then, in 2022, I found his audition video of Chris Brown’s “Take You Down” while cleaning out my phone. I felt the same chills I had in 2019, posted it to my Stories, and tagged him. He responded immediately, and we reconnected.

When I asked about his music, he casually replied, “Ain’t sh*t”—one of Tonio’s go-to responses. 😂 Meanwhile, his sound to his viral hit “OMW” was going viral, generating an estimate of 40,000 creations on TikTok. That momentum eventually led to a major-label deal through Seven14ENT with Def Jam under Tunji Balogun’s leadership.

Tonio’s sound carried the soul of gospel with the sauce of both today and yesterday’s R&B. Whether singing about God, love, sex, pain, or abandonment, he invited you into his world with vulnerability, heartfelt melodies, and youthful honesty.

I know I got on his nerves challenging his lyrics: “Where’s the story?” “There’s no cohesion.” 😂 But his gift was special, and all I wanted was to steward it well and push him toward his best.

Little brother, thank you for trusting me and allowing me to take this journey with you. Thank you for allowing me to close my first major-label deal. Thank you for being a bridge for a new brotherhood with Christian.

I will forever cherish our brotherhood.

My heart aches over the way you transitioned, but I pray God has received you into His loving arms.

Rest well, lil’ brother. 🤍💔

Big Brother,

Ken Pen
