The story of Oak Cliff’s Tenth Street Historic District 👇🏾👇🏾

After emancipation, formerly enslaved Black Texans began establishing communities where they could build lives, businesses, churches, schools, and families of their own. One of those communities developed in Oak Cliff and became known as Tenth Street—one of the most intact Freedmen’s Towns in the country.

Black families were living in the area by the 1880s, and the neighborhood expanded significantly after T.L. Marsalis and the Dallas Land & Loan Company platted the Tenth Street Addition in 1890.

The neighborhood became a thriving African-American community, home to churches, schools, businesses and generations of families. Historic landmarks include Greater El Bethel Baptist Church, Oak Cliff Cemetery.

But the community also faced enormous challenges. Construction of Interstate 35 in the 1950s destroyed or displaced roughly 175 historic structures, while segregation and later urban renewal dramatically changed the neighborhood.

Despite those losses, Tenth Street survived.

In 1993, it became a Dallas Landmark District, followed by National Register of Historic Places designation in 1994 for its cultural and architectural significance.

Today, its historic homes and streets tell a story that goes far beyond architecture. They represent the determination of people who built a community after freedom—and the ongoing effort to preserve that history for generations to come.

Tenth Street isn’t just a historic neighborhood. It’s a living piece of Dallas history.

We have not posted in nearly a week... but for good reason... 👀

Y'all have been keeping us busy!! 😱 With requests all over the Metroplex to come out, volunteers wanting to join us and voters needing to get registered, it has been hard to keep up. Luckily we have some amazing partners (not all tagged) who continue to help make it happen! 🥰💪

Some roads lead you somewhere new. This one brought me home.

I'm truly honored to return to South Oak Cliff High School as the Director of Bands, home of the legendary Nu Soul of the South.

This school means so much to me. It's where I grew as a leader, where I learned what hard work and excellence really look like, and where I had the privilege of watching students become confident young leaders.

Coming back isn't something I take lightly. It's an opportunity to give back to the place that gave so much to me, and I'm ready to pour everything I have into these students, their families, our alumni, and this community.

To every mentor who guided me, every student who trusted me, and everyone who believed in me along the way, thank you. I wouldn't be here without you.

At the end of the day, this has never been about me. It's about the students. It's about building leaders, creating opportunities, and continuing the legacy of excellence at South Oak Cliff.

Let's get to work. The best is still ahead.

Swipe through, and if you know a student who belongs in this band, registration is now open. 💛🐻
