POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What was one of the keys to Nebraska Football’s success under Coach Boyd Epley?

A timed 5-yard sprint inside the weight room.

Not a squat.
Not a bench press.
Not a power clean.

A sprint.

When I had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Epley recently, this was one of the things that stood out to me.

Think about what we are trying to accomplish as Strength & Conditioning Coaches.

We want athletes to produce force FAST.

The speed of contraction we can achieve with a barbell is nothing compared to what athletes experience when they sprint, jump, cut, and compete on the field.

Coach Epley understood that decades ago.

And the beauty of the 5-yard sprint is that you can manipulate it however you want based on the athlete and what you are trying to accomplish:

Two-point start.
Lateral start.
Single-leg start.
Push-up start.
Change of direction into re-acceleration.

Time it. Record it. Compete.

We use the Dashr Silver timing system because it makes testing simple while giving us valid and reliable data we can actually track.

Sometimes the best ideas aren't new.

Sometimes we need to listen to the coaches who helped build this profession.

One of the things I love most about this profession is the people.

There’s nothing better than having a friend write a book, send you a copy, and include a handwritten note. Jim (@goodathleteproject ) isn’t just a true friend—he’s one heck of a coach. He’s been recognized as an NSCA Coach of the Year, has helped build K–12 strength and conditioning curriculum, and is always willing to jump in and help however he can.

I’m excited to dive into this book, but I’m even more excited about the questions, conversations, and ideas that will come from it.

Thank you so much, Jim! I truly appreciate your friendship and everything you do for our profession.

NEW EPISODE: Win Now, Not at Life

Six months into a doctoral program in Educational Leadership and Organizational Innovation, and the research is starting to ask harder questions than the coaching did.

In this episode, Tex breaks down research questions from the doctorate worth every coach's attention and reintroduces Social Emotional Learning. Not the K-12 buzzword version. The real framework, five competencies that define how human beings function inside groups under pressure. And he makes the case for why college athletics, built for performance and reshaped by the transfer portal, is not the environment for SEL development and a place that needs it most.

The episode closes with three research questions driving his dissertation in practice: what captains actually know about leading, what program conditions make or break them, and what coaches assume their leaders are ready for that they aren't.

Sports don't build leaders by accident. This episode is about why and what we're going to do about it.

I thought I was the right coach for every moment.

I wasn't.

Summer 2021, we lost Taden, our Team Captain, their best friend. And a lot of what I knew about how to lead stopped working. The hardass approach, the systems, the structure. None of it touched what we were all going through and seemed to cause more conflict than control it.

I had to get honest: I didn't have the tools for this.

So I started asking different questions. Not what does this team need to perform, but what do they need to be present, play with the passion of their leader, and still find meaning in the game?

That question changed me.

I grew with them. With the staff.

Because I had to reckon with something: we ask athletes to turn off their emotions. Push it down. Put on a face. Keep moving.

That's not toughness. That's suffering in silence and calling it strength.

Real toughness is having the tools to navigate the hard things. Real leadership is teaching those that do not possess the tools what and how to use them. To bring up the people around you when they're down. To show them they can do hard things and that they're not doing them alone.

That's what Taden did for them.

So the work became leaning into the Wolfpack culture he built, letting his passion and pride for his teammates keep living in that locker room. Showing these athletes that those tools were already inside them.

Taden never left them. He built them.I shared this moment at the Beyond Strength Summit because I know a lot of coaches are exactly where I was: competent, committed, and completely unprepared for the human moments that define a season.

Sports don't teach lessons. Coaches do.

And sometimes the most important lesson is the one the team teaches you.

On April 24, we brought together a great group of coaches, educators, and leaders to discuss research and practical recommendations for developing #life skills in a strength setting.

High performance and human development are not enemies – they are co-enhancing, if leaders are willing to embrace the weight room for its full educational potential 💪

Sports don’t teach life lessons… YOU do, coach. Amazing to have so many dedicated educators in house. Thank you to all who attended!

When a Podcast Becomes a Masterclass 🎙️📊
In Chicagoland for the Beyond Strength Summit and sat down with Jim Davis [@goodathleteproject] for what was supposed to be a Captains & Coaches Podcast episode...
It quickly turned into lecture prep and a live whiteboard session on camera.

We went deep on Jim's research models, including the AUIRS framework:
📍 Awareness - Recognizing what's happening
📍 Understanding - Making sense of it
📍 Intentionality - Choosing your response
📍 Review - Reflecting on the outcome
📍 Synthesis - Integrating the learning

This is the kind of conversation that reminds me why I love this work, breaking down complex frameworks into practical application for coaches and athletes.

Excited to share the stage with Jim at the Beyond Strength Summit this weekend! I'll be presenting on applying Social Emotional Learning at sports practices and handing off layered leadership practices to athletes.

If you're in the area, come learn with us 👇

Podcast drops soon—stay tuned 🎧
