Four preserves, four ecosystems, community, and good fire. Our time to burn draws near. This fall we’re planning prescribed burns at Martin Griffin, Cypress Grove, Bouverie, and Modini preserves. From coastal prairies and redwoods to oak woodlands, grasslands, and specialized plant communities, in each place, fire is carefully applied as a tool for ecosystem health, maintenance, and restoration. These burns are building the people-power to do more good fire too. They are training opportunities for people to advance their skills and qualifications in prescribed fire. Building that workforce increases the North Bay’s capacity to care for the landscapes we love and create more resilient communities. Curious about the what’s ahead for community burns planned across Sonoma and Marin? As the Woodside Fire on the Sonoma Coast reminds us of our relationship with wildfire, we’re reflecting on the origin story of the GFA (@goodfirealliance). Formed in the aftermath of the devastating 2017 fires, the emerging GFA community came together during the 2020 Walbridge Fire to support another moment of crisis. The local residents, trained in prescribed fire, were hired by Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District to serve as a hand crew on the Walbridge Fire. The unprecedented moment served as an inflection point for the emerging community of fire practitioners, building a foundation of trust between agencies and the GFA as a skilled workforce, and sparking a new degree of cohesion that made way for the wave of good fire in the years that followed. Seen above are photos from the Walbridge Fire in 2020 and a map of community-based broadcast burns between 2024–2026 in Sonoma County. It’s almost spring burn season and you know what that means. Time for fire practitioners to throw down and brush up those fireline skills! We recently hosted a training event for, by, and within the Good Fire Alliance to refresh wildland firefighter/firelighter certifications. This year’s training was focusing on lessons learned within the community in the last year, brought to life in field presentations and discussions facilitated by core GFA members Ben Hatchett, Ryan Klausch, Tom Tolliver, and Steve Pye. Hoselays, emergency shelter deployments, incident within an incident, and fireline leadership field stations were led by Thea Maria Carlson, Joe Plaugher, and Fire Forward crew members Paul Sokoloski, Adam Sawicky, Hannah Lopez, Annie Madden, and Michael Garrett. Big thanks to Sonoma Land Trust and Sonoma Ag + Open Space for their generous grant support, and Pepperwood for hosting. An extra special thanks to organizer Garrett Gradillas for orchestrating this joy-filled event that meant more folks are ready to burn! FRESH BURN BOSS ALERT 🔥 Please join us in ringing in 2025 by celebrating newly certified California Prescribed Fire Burn Bosses (CA-Rx)! We’re overjoyed that 6 fellows and 3 team members from Fire Forward completed their final CA-Rx training and certification in 2024: 🌟 Jiordi Rosales, The School for Inclement Weather 🌟 Ryan Klausch, @castateparks 🌟 Thea Maria Carlson, @monansrill and @tribalecorestoration 🌟 Devin Dombrowski, @nature_org 🌟 Len Mazur, @sonomacountyparks 🌟 Paul Weber, @sonomacountyparks 🌟 Annie Madden, @auduboncanyonranch 🌟 Paul Sokoloski, @auduboncanyonranch 🌟 Brian Peterson, @auduboncanyonranch Our fellowship program was launched in 2021 to train land stewards from key partner organizations to earn California state-certified Burn Boss (CA-Rx) and NWCG Squad Boss qualifications, enabling them and their respective organizations to plan and coordinate prescribed burns upon completion of the program. With a CA-Rx qualification, Burn Bosses can lead prescribed burns in California with the support of the CA Liability Claims fund enrollment. The certification enables them to review and approve burn plans, serve as mentors and formal evaluators for other CA-Rx trainees – boosting the overall capacity of our fire community in North Bay. Cheers to the tremendous dedication and hard work that went into making these qualifications a reality – from the new Burn Bosses to those who supported them and made the whole thing possible. We’re thrilled to see you all light the way forward into 2025! Photos by @sashwa.burrous and Erika Lutz #fireforward #goodfire #burnbaddies #prescribedfireworkforce #auduboncanyonranch

NEW STORY 🌱 North Bay residents join together to tend nearly 1,000 acres with good fire A breathtaking night burn in the coastal mountains of northwest Sonoma County. A wildfire scar in Santa Rosa tended by many hands and good fire. A coastal prairie burn on the Nicasio Reservoir seeded with native grasses wildflowers in fertile ash, influencing hope for healthier grasslands in the future. In 2024 we cooperatively burned nearly 1,000 acres with Fire Forward Fellows and partners across the North Bay, a number that has doubled since 2020. Our 12-person prescribed fire module launched in early last year also contributed to the increased capacity, resulting in a 30 percent increase in prescribed burns either led or supported by our team. FRESH BURN BOSS ALERT – AGAIN! 🔥 We’re overjoyed that fellow Joe Plaugher and our program's very own prescribed fire managers Hannah Lopez and Garrett Gradillas are now certified California Prescribed Fire Burn Bosses (CA-Rx)! 🌟 Hannah Lopez, @AudubonCanyonRanch 🌟 Joe Plaugher, @SonomaLandTrust 🌟 Garrett Gradillas, @AudubonCanyonRanch California now has 57 CA-Rx burn bosses in the entire state – with nearly a quarter based right here in North Bay. We’re beyond proud of the 13 who trained through Fire Forward, whose certification enables them and their organizations – @PepperwoodwoodPreserveCA, @CAStateParks, @SonomaCountyParks, @MonansRill, Sonoma Land Trust, and School for Inclement Weather – the capacity to plan and implement prescribed burns with coverage from the CA Liability Claims fund. The CA-Rx certification enables them to review and approve burn plans, serve as mentors and formal evaluators for other CA-Rx trainees, boosting the overall capacity of our prescribed fire community in the Sonoma, Napa, Lake, and Marin counties and beyond. Working together with Sonoma Land Trust and Sonoma Valley Wildlands Collaborative has strengthened our local community of fire practitioners, and highlighted our ability to organize cooperative burns and support resource sharing. This ongoing partnership has increased the region’s capacity to use safe and beneficial fire to steward healthy ecosystems and resilient communities. Cheers to the tremendous of dedication and hard work that went into making these qualifications a reality – to those who dedicated years to bringing the CA-Rx program to life, to these three new Burn Bosses, and those who supported these folks along the way to make the whole thing possible.
