this post is about me feeling myself and a celebration of my gorgeous talented friends

reminder to myself: you do not need to remain mysterious to be loved

On a seemingly normal Friday evening in Long Beach/Signal Hill, two well-loved internet bongs (one makes us laugh with her tongue-in-cheek humor and the other puts a modern spin on music from the golden era) hosted a meet and greet at Ten Mile Brewing. I got invited to join and document with the vibes.

The beautiful thing about this event in particular— it turned out to be so much more than a meet and greet for them both. It turned into a meet and greet for everyone in attendance. Long Beach is without a doubt, the homecoming experience for Koun Khmer in America. You’ll just so happen to meet cool people doing cool things and walk away with a new family member or three.

Fostering and building relationships in our diasporic community has been quite easy and accessible thanks to the digital world that we live in. But I hope we never lose the art of building meaningful connections in-person, even on a seemingly normal Friday evening.

Thank you @vtecdagreat + @khmergirldidi for bringing the gang together! @tinmanlbc for the music @laomama123 for the grub and @tenmilebrewing for hosting. Truly memorable night.

Opening night was beautiful.

It’s always amazing to see how everyone has their own way of viewing and feeling the art. People flowing through the room, looking, chatting, and staying a while to sit with the beauty.

It was really nice to see new faces, friends, and family pop in to experience something so many of us gave real time and energy to bring together. The love, the reshares, the support, the purchases, and the memories made, all make it very special.

look what still blooms is now on view through july 11.

Come by, spend some time with the work, and see the space while the show is up. Our gift shop is freshly stocked with prints, stickers, local artist goods, pieces we brought back from mexico city, and more. Every purchase helps keep shows like this happening.

Look What Still Blooms brings together artists whose work reflects how beauty, culture, and meaning continue to emerge through everyday life. Identity is present without permission, and culture does not disappear under pressure, but continues to evolve and take form.

May we continue to honor our ancestors and elders, lead our future generations with kindness and compassion, cultivate the culture and strengthen our community across the world.

I am so eternally grateful for the contributions that everyone has made to make what The Khmer Collective is today. I look forward to meeting you all in the year of the Fire Horse.

សូមអរគុណ. Saum arkoun! Happy New Year!
