Potato Head finally opened a store. Of course, it doesn’t really look like one. 📍 Good Times General Store, Desa Potato Head, Bali Good Times General Store has just opened in Bali as Potato Head’s first permanent retail space and craft centre. Designed with OMA, the space is organised around five interconnected areas where retail sits alongside making, experimentation and workshops. You can shop the Potato Head collection, discover objects created from discarded materials by Max Lamb, but also see natural dyes being produced from food and plant waste, or recycled plastic being transformed on site. Even the architecture follows the same logic: rammed earth, bamboo, reclaimed wood and terrazzo incorporating recycled offcuts. I particularly like that the workshops haven’t been hidden backstage. At a time when almost any image can be generated in seconds, @potatohead chose to create this one the slow way. For the campaign celebrating the opening of its @goodtimes.generalstore in Bali, every set, prop and costume were physically created by artists and craftspeople. Contemporary artist @nanouhero and a team of eight took six days to weave a ten-metre bamboo aeroplane, while Black Menu Projects constructed a five-metre sphere out of waste and transported it to the set on the back of a motorbike. In other parts of the scene, chairs wander into the sea and the Balinese dance collective Bumi Bajra move through sequences that feel like both a performance and a very strange dream. Creative directed by Gary Horton, with art direction by @viaplanetearth and photography by @juliannn_song, the campaign brings together makers from Bali and further afield. Its handmade nature also feels closely connected to what the store represents. The Good Times General Store, which has been designed by OMA, is Potato Head’s first permanent retail outlet in Desa Potato Head. Together with clothing, homewares and Wasted by Max Lamb, visitors are given the opportunity to see natural dyeing and plastic moulding being carried out inside the store, with the materials, processes and the people involved being intentionally left visible. There’s a certain pleasure in the fact that the thing which looks impossible in the photograph actually did exist, in a world that is becoming more and more synthetic visually.

@goodtimes.generalstore has officially arrived at @potatohead, bringing together design, creativity, and the work of local artisans under one roof. More than just a store, the space explores how materials often seen as waste can be given a second life and transformed into products with purpose and stories of their own. Beyond shopping selected pieces from Potato Head, visitors can also take part in workshops ranging from natural dyeing and weaving to upcycling and material exploration, turning food waste, plants, and used plastics into something new and functional.
