One of two first-place-winning compositions at last year's Lilburn Trust NZSM Composers Competition was Mallory Elmo's Scene from 'Vivian's Ghost'. This startling scene from a work-in-progress opera depicts the ghost of a trans teen coming back to haunt a scaremongering journalist. Combining noisy musical gestures from the ensemble and eery echoing lines from the singers, this work explores the absurdity and emotional messiness of an intensely relevant story. ‘chrysalis (d[i̶]s)section’ takes a scalpel to poetic form(s), making a collage of neo-Nietzschean rhyme, jazz-inspired intonation, & second-wave feminist calls for male castration. In three sections, the ‘caterpillar to butterfly’ cliché of personal metamorphosis is rewritten, while exoskeletal references are both irreverently & deferentially effaced. Silly, serious, & self-referential: rhythmically-punctuated wordplay toys with the notion of authorship, across time.
