The first full month of the fall semester is already in the books in the Department of Art at ODU. Good vibes, great discussions, and lots of productivity so far in the studio classrooms, during group crits, at artist talks, at openings at several of our campus art galleries, including the Gordon Art Galleries and the Hixon Student Gallery, and at the first big meeting of the Student Art League. Scroll for pics of classroom activities, the artist talk and opening reception for Ju Yun’s solo show “Fragments of Memory,” the opening reception for the exhilarating exhibition “Bread and Puppet Theater: Sculpture in Action”, the first meeting of the Student Art League, and the opening of “Dante’s Dance Club.” Loads more on the arts agenda for the coming months. Looking forward to all of it. 🎨 🙌 🤙

Join us on Wednesday, October 7 at 12:00 p.m. for a curator's tour of Bread + Puppet Theater: Sculpture in Action with Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth. Chronicling over 60 years of art and performance by the legendary theater company, the exhibition explores some of the central recurring genres of performances and characters that Bread and Puppet have become celebrated for. The tour will focus on puppetry as a material and visual language, the company’s influences and references, and the collective vision of a decades-long oeuvre across many forms of media.

Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth is Director and Curator of the Gordon Art Galleries at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His work has appeared in publications of the Smithsonian Institution, The American Anthropological Association, The American Folklore Society, The University of Illinois Press, The University of Indiana Press, West Virginia University Press, and Cambridge University. His 2023 book Finding the Singing Spruce: Musical Instrument Makers and Appalachia's Mountain Forests (West Virginia University Press) was a finalist for the Weatherford Book Award for Best Nonfiction book about Appalachia.

Art comes to life at ODU. 🎭

“Bread + Puppet Theater: Sculpture in Action” recently opened at the @gordonartgalleries, bringing more than six decades of puppetry, performance and visual storytelling to campus.

Visit the Gordon Art Galleries and experience the exhibition through December 12. A smiling visitor wearing a patterned headscarf looks upward while viewing large puppets and artwork at the Bread + Puppet Theater exhibition.

Today’s Community Learning Experience (CLE) was all about connection! Explorers visited @gordonartgalleries on the campus of @olddominionu to explore current connections to each of their classes.

They found synergy and inspiration in the works of Ju Yun, Bread + Puppets Theater, and photos from Food, Community, and Climate on the Eastern Shore.

“You don’t make art with just paint, it can be all types of things like hair, signs, and more.”-CaMiyah, 6th Grade Explorer

Bread and Puppet Theater: Sculpture in Action
An Exhibition of Puppets, Paintings, and Prints
On View September 4 - December 12, 2026 at @gordonartgalleries.

Over six decades, Bread and Puppet Theater and its founders Peter and Elka Schumann have employed a visual language through puppetry to satirize systems of power, call everyday people to action, and honor humanity’s creative place within the sweeping breadth of life. This exhibition features common recurring puppets and characters who have acted in the company’s processions, protests, plays, and pageants since the 1960s. They are presented in active, vibrant tableaus true to the company’s practice of putting art into action.

Admission is free. 5 life-sized puppets on display at Gordon Art Galleries at Old Dominion University. One wears an orange apron and holds a mug, the second wears a flannel shirt and holds a shovel, the third wears a flower apron and holds a wooden spoon, the fourth wears a brown dress and apron and holds a broom and the fifth wears a flannel shirt and holds a pot.

Clapping a beat and shouting “Courage!” repeatedly with a group of friends and strangers was not what I expected at the @gordonartgalleries opening night of the @breadandpuppetpress Sculpture in Action exhibition - and isn’t it wonderful that the world is bigger and crazier and suddener than what we think? Bread and Puppets Theatre has been making art in the streets and fields since the 1960s. Their puppets don’t talk - they don’t need to. They express joy and injustice and grief and love of the Earth via gesture, texture, color, the way the puppeteer and the puppet work together. If you live in the Hampton Roads area I highly recommend coming down and seeing the show - it will be up until Dec 2nd. Many thanks to @oduarts and the @oduartdept folks who brought this great opportunity to our community!

Sending out several rounds of congratulations and applause to all the exhibiting artists, graduating seniors, awardees, and exhibition organizers we celebrated in various venues during a special evening for the ODU Art Department last week. The opening of “Waypoint”, the BFA Senior Exhibition mounted in the Gordon Art Galleries, was the marquee event, during which an awards ceremony was held to distribute a generous number of scholarship prizes to our studio art, graphic design, and art history students. “Waypoint” features a wide range of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, photography, glass, metalsmithing, ceramics, textiles, woodworking, installation, and video by Mohammad Aslam, Wilmesha Griffin, Kathleen Grimes, Odelia Handy, Laché, Theodore Mayberry, Heather Nguyen, Audrey Redford, Colten Taylor, and Cristina White. It’s on view through 5/17. We also had openings over in the Barry Arts Building for two other shows on view through this week. In the Rotunda is “Where Wood, Wear Wood, Wood Ware?”, featuring a suite of very impressive sculptures by students in Professor John Roth’s Arts 492: Wood Studio course. Down the hall is “Between Us,” a Visual Studies Capstone Exhibition by Kamahria Jones. We have such a wealth of arts resources and talent at ODU. That’s real talk. Once again, kudos and congrats all around! 👏 🙌 🏆 🎉
