The @biennale_de_lubumbashi is back for its 9th edition! Unfolding under the profound and provocative theme: “Eating the Soil / Manger la terre” (Kukuria bulongo) and taking place from October 15 to November 15, 2026 in #lubumbashi #DRC Under the artistic direction of @sorana_munsya , this year’s program positions the Biennale as a critical testing ground for artistic “indiscipline”—discovering alternative paths for existence, creativity, and transcendence from present-day global challenges.

Founded as an independent grassroots initiative in 2008, the Biennale de Lubumbashi and the Picha collective—also established in 2008—support and showcase artistic creation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The historical context of Kukuria bulongo traces back centuries to the region's Copper Eaters—communities that cultivated an intimate, spiritual, and cosmological relationship with mineral deposits long before colonial extraction. In this context, taking from the earth was an act of ingestion and continuity; the earth enters the body to become memory. While a century of industrial mining has left behind a landscape of craters, contaminated earth, and poisoned waters, the Biennale challenges the global art world to look beyond an “epistemology of the hole”—a regime of knowledge that defines the Congo only by its lacks, absences, and what has been violently stolen from it.

Co-founder of the biennale and the @picha_art_center and artist Jean Katambayi addresses this paradoxical extraction through his own artistic practice with electricity, technology, and personal history.

By asking what grows around, circulates through, and remains beyond the mining craters and environmental poison, the 9th Biennale de Lubumbashi stands as a resilient ecosystem of artists, producers, technicians, and researchers deeply rooted in the DRC while leading international contemporary art conversations

I’m thrilled to be supporting this year’s editing with editing, writing and communications. If you’re keen to have more information, don’t hesitate to reach out!
