Del Jones’ ‘Court Is Closed,’ a 3LP set, issue #23 in the Now-Again Reserve Edition. Link in my bio and stories for more info and to purchase via Rappcats and our store at Bandcamp.

Del and his family’s music is underground Philadelphia’s response to Amiri Baraka’s and Gil Scott-Heron’s indictments of the Black American experience. Del was a poet, a proto-rapper and a catalyst, and he had call to action not just for his city, but for the nation.

Equal parts psychedelic rock and deep funk, Del’s rarely heard ‘Court Is Closed’ saw only the scantest of issues before he overdubbed horns on the album, remixed and augmented it with additional music, and issued it as the better-known ‘Positive Vibes.’ That’s how I first heard the album, back when ‘Positive Vibes’ was wall record selling for far more money than I had to spare at New York City’s The Sound Library.

It took me years to finally the first, superior issue of the album, when my friend Chris Veltri pulled it out of “Boston” Bob Gibson’s collection at Ubiquity Records HQ in Costa Mesa nearly 20 years ago. I had to know more. I knew more people had to hear Del’s music. I knew there had to be a deep story aside it. It took many years and many turns, but I finally was able to get in touch with Del’s family and make my case.

Thus, this album, like all albums on Now-Again, has been officially licensed and produced with full participation of its creators – in this case, given that Del is deceased, his brother and bandmember Wayman Jones oversaw this release with me, on the Jones family’s behalf. It was due to Wayman’s unflinching and steadfast dedication to his brother and his family’s cause that we can hear previously unreleased Del Jones’ songs like “Attica” and experience both versions of the album, along with all of the music Del issued on rare 7” singles.

Jeremy Cargill and I put together Del and his family’s story, and it’s presented in an oversized booklet that delves into Del’s music, milieu and life as an author, activist and orator, shining a light not only on his prescient awareness of hip-hop, but also on the struggles he confronted, and his urgent, current mandate.

1984 a Washington, DC.
