I’m excited to share that Rob McDonald is a contributing author to On Nochaway! I first met Rob when we were both featured in Southern Cultures’ Snapshot: Climate, and I’m delighted to say that he has since become a dear friend. I have been most grateful not only for his generous words, but for all his guidance on this project and beyond. Rob’s discernment and attention to the things that matter come through equally in his photography and writing. His work is marked by grounded observation coupled with a remarkable sensitivity and affinity for his subjects. He also has an interest in the places that shape us, evident in much of what he does, such as Poplar Forest, a study of the retreat home of Thomas Jefferson. If you don’t already know his work, please check it out! Rob McDonald is a professor of English and Fine Arts and Associate Dean of the Faculty at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. He received a Professional Fellowship (Photography) from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in 2019-2020 and was a resident fellow in the Visual Arts at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2013. @gourdtree @ugapress #longleaf #longleafpines #contributingauthor #robmcdonald

On Nochaway NewSouth Books (UGA Press) I’m thrilled to announce that my documentary photography project on longleaf pine restoration, On Nochaway, is officially slated for publication in January 2027. Published by NewSouth Books (UGA Press), the book explores the intersection of family legacy and ecology in southwest Georgia. This project represents years of documentation, personal reflection and research, and I am honored to have it join the prestigious catalog at UGA Press. A huge thank you to contributors @janisseray_writer, @jrmcurator and @gourdtree for their generous thoughts and to the editors and collaborators at @ugapress who are helping bring this work to life. Stay tuned for pre-order details and updates in the coming months.

⚡️IN STOCK⚡️ Studio Notes - My Time with Cy (book + print) by Rob McDonald www.anzenbergergallery-bookshop.com For the last twenty years of his life, Cy Twombly returned annually to Lexington, his hometown in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. As evidence of his attachment, he bought a house, and during extended visits in both spring and fall, he created a number of important works in modest studios he rented nearby. In large part, however, he spent his days observing the rhythms of the small college town, taking long reflective drives in the countryside, and exploring entertainments with a small circle of acquaintances. One of those was photographer Rob McDonald. @gourdtree @anzenbergergallery @brotfabrikwien #bookstagram#anzenbergergallerybookshop #photobook #photography #photobasedart #photobookjousting #americanartist #americanphotographer #painting @cytwombly_artist @twombly.cy @cytwombly_ @cy_twombly #cytwombly #cytwomblystudio #studionotes

It’s been a real treat to collaborate with two brilliant artist and what are becoming good friends on @float_magazine ‘s new exhibition “Distant Dialogues” - I’m honored and count my self lucky to know and work alongside @lisa_m_beard and @micahmccoy. Here’s to all the selected artists and our shared pursuit of image making 🥂 ———————— Photographs like many things first encountered are often blank slates and meaningless until the viewer places the frame in a larger context. The images in Distant Dialogues suggest a sort of harmony of spirit that hints at what is not contained in the frame but rather can be found beyond the bounds that shape a photograph and provide enough contrast to construct meaning. A yearning for some connection is seen and felt in these photographs. A yearning for meaning and wanting to be a part of something larger than oneself. That resonance of spirit is the glue that binds these images and gives rise to a shared sense of lack described in the frames. And so we as artists and makers are left with a pit in our being, a feeling that is not easily resolved. However, the sought after resolution is missing the point. Aiming for but missing the mark. The significance lies in the act of striving, in this case, for connection. Through the labor of seeking meaning and connection, ironically, connections and meanings are made and community can be formed, even if we may not wholly feel it, for there is no resolving the all too human struggle to belong and be a part of something - it always seems slippery and just outside of the frame. Last day of @foto_wien today but our > current exhibition >>> 💥ROB MCDONALD: STUDIO NOTES - MY TIME WITH CY can be seen until August 18, 2023 Wed-Fri 12-6 pm www.anzenbergergallery.com About these photographs: In December 2012, months after Twombly’s death in 2011, the Lexington studio was emptied. When McDonald received an unexpected invitation to see the space a final time, he thought to bring along a digital point-and-shoot camera. The final grouping of works in the exhibition at AnzenbergerGallery are prints based on those snapshots of the vacant space. Images spotlight traces of paint and markings, poignantly evoking both presence and absence. Print prices on request by gallery@anzenberger.com or on our website www.anzenbergergallery.com @gourdtree #mixedmedia #cytwombly #robmcdonald #exhibition #anzenbergergallery #paintedwalls #brotfabrikwien #photography #photobasedartist #photobasedart #contemporaryart #contemporaryphotography @cytwombly_ @brotfabrikwien @favoriten_favourites

💥NEW STORY💥 STUDIO NOTES - MY TIME WITH CY by Rob McDonald / AnzenbergerAgency www.anzenberger.com For the last twenty years of his life, Cy Twombly returned annually to Lexington, his hometown in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Over the years, McDonald made many of photographs of Twombly’s home and storefront studio in Lexington’s downtown, typically with the artist himself present. There was not much conversation during those times, but when McDonald shared the images with Twombly, he always seemed curious to see what had caught the photographer’s eye. This is the first time these pictures are offered to be published to the media. #cytwombly @gourdtree #studionotes #licensingpictures #photoagency #anzenbergeragency #copyright #photography
