Rewilding tourism is gaining momentum💪

Across Europe, wildlife is making a comeback, and travellers are finding new ways to experience it first-hand.

🐎 On Croatia’s Lika Plains, photographic safaris take visitors into a landscape where semi-wild horses and Tauros roam beneath the Velebit Mountains. Their grazing helps maintain a mosaic of grasslands and scrub, supporting a rich variety of wildlife.

From tracking bears in ancient forests to exploring wildlife-rich deltas, rewilding tourism gives travellers a chance to discover how landscapes are recovering, while creating opportunities for local businesses and the communities connected to them, and, of course, enjoy memorable trips. 🤝

Through @gowilderplaces, travellers can discover and book wildlife experiences and nature-based stays across European rewilding landscapes.

🏆 This approach to tourism recently received recognition at the 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 in Seville, where Wilder Places took second place in the 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 & 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, standing out among more than 200 entries.

🌿 What if your holiday could also be a week of hands-on conservation work?

Work alongside @rewilding_portugal and their Wild Côa partners to help restore one of Portugal’s most special landscapes, during seven days of hands-on volunteer work for rewilding and nature restoration.

After breakfast, you’ll spend your mornings and early afternoons out in the field: getting involved in practical conservation work, learning about rewilding and seeing first-hand what it takes to restore nature on the ground.

But this week isn’t all work. 😉

In the late afternoons, you’ll have time to explore the Côa Valley and discover more of the landscape you’re helping to protect. Depending on the day, you can join an optional activity, explore the surrounding countryside, visit local places, or simply slow down and enjoy being here.

So yes, you’ll be volunteering. You’ll probably get a little dusty. You’ll definitely learn a lot. And you’ll also have time to experience the wild landscapes, local culture and beautiful surroundings of the Côa Valley.

E se a melhor forma de proteger a natureza fosse torná-la útil para quem vive ao seu lado?

É essa a estratégia da Rewilding Europe para 2030, explicada por Victor van Dooren, o seu diretor de Enterprise. A ideia é fazer com que a recuperação da natureza gere mesmo oportunidades, emprego, negócios, um destino turístico. Porque uma natureza de que as pessoas beneficiam é uma natureza que as próprias comunidades defendem.

O caminho passa muito pelo turismo de natureza, feito com respeito pela paisagem e a favor de quem cá vive. E é aí que entra a Wilder Places, a plataforma da Rewilding Europe que liga quem procura experiências de natureza a quem as oferece, em dez paisagens de rewilding por toda a Europa. O Grande Vale do Côa é uma delas.

É esse turismo que pode dar às organizações de conservação um futuro menos dependente de fundos, e é exatamente isso que o Côa está a provar que é possível.

What if the best way to protect nature was to make it worth something to the people who live beside it?

That is Rewilding Europe's strategy for 2030, explained by Victor van Dooren, its Director of Enterprise. The idea is to make nature's recovery genuinely create opportunities, jobs, businesses, a travel destination. Because nature that people benefit from is nature that communities themselves defend.

Much of the path runs through nature-based tourism, done with respect for the landscape and in favour of those who live here. And that is where Wilder Places comes in, Rewilding Europe's platform that connects those looking for nature experiences with those who offer them, across ten rewilding landscapes throughout Europe. The Greater Côa Valley is one of them.

It is this kind of tourism that can give conservation organisations a future less dependent on funding, and that is exactly what the Côa is proving to be possible.

Nature recovery is creating new opportunities for people and businesses 🦬🏠

A new €60,000 loan from 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 is helping Casa Sub Măgrin (@submagrin), a guesthouse in Romania’s Southern Carpathians, double its capacity to eight guests.

The property sits close to the European bison reintroduction area in the Țarcu Mountains, where @rewildingromania and local partners have released bison since 2014.

🤝 Casa Sub Măgrin’s commitment to rewilding extends beyond welcoming visitors. The business will contribute a percentage of its booking income to the 𝗕𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱, recently established by the Rewilding Romania team to support local farmers whose crops or orchards may have been affected by the return of the bison.

The guesthouse is also part of the @wilderplaces network, so visitors can stay close to the landscape and discover the nature and culture of the Țarcu Mountains.

🚵‍♀️ Cycling 170km, 2500m elevation gain in the Velebit Mountains of Croatia. Incredible scenery, wildlife and great fun with friends!

🐻 The highlight was without a doubt the 4 bear encounters we had on the way. It is humbling to share our space with these mighty creatures. Also tons of tracks of wolf, golden jackal, wildcat, badger, fox, marten, deer... reminding us that we are travelling through a very wild area.

👋 Meeting the @rewildingvelebit team in Lika Plains and sharing a great meal together was a perfect way to end the trip.

Now our friends are back in Canada and we're off to Bosnia! 🇧🇦
