Here’s a shoutout to “You Were Never Innocent” by Goyell Saab [@goyellsaab], a song we came across earlier this year as part of a Songdew contest.

The track comes from a deeply personal place. According to Goyell, “You Were Never Innocent” was written during one of the lowest phases of his life. The song is told from the perspective of a man who knows that he is being lied to by the love of his life. He attempts to distance himself from her, only to realise that the distance seems to embolden her further.

Despite being fully aware of the deception, he continues to hide his pain whenever he is around her. The emotional conflict at the heart of the song is captured in the lines:
“I know that you were never innocent, and I know you never really cared a bit. I know that it was all a fantasy, but I can’t save myself from myself.”

The song reflects the helplessness of knowing the truth while still being emotionally trapped in a relationship—caught between the desire to walk away and the inability to let go.

Goyellsaab played his fully original music set at Atrangi Katta last month! A fully electronic set, a one man band, and all the vibes ❤️ We love making a space for indie music, a place for consciously absorbing music and building relationships.

🎤 Interesting fact:

Black Box Open Mic is a small, tucked away gathering in Bandra where artists sign up for 5 minute slots and often walk in not knowing who else will be in the room. There is no rehearsal, no pre-arranged collaboration, and no expectation beyond showing up with something real.

At a recent session, four musicians who had never met before ended up on stage together at the close of the night. What began as a casual “anyone want to jam?” turned into a fully formed, spontaneous collaboration, built entirely on listening in real time.

Moments like this are not programmed or curated, they are a byproduct of the space itself and an environment designed less like a performance venue and more like a padded room for artists to explore, risk, and connect without pressure.

By the end of the night, what started as individual 5 minute sets had dissolved into something shared, unplanned, and impossible to replicate.
