⚡ BMX ACCELERATION: PUT RESISTANCE TO WORK.

A new review of 15 systematic reviews found the most consistent benefit of resisted sprint training was improved short-distance running acceleration—particularly over 20 meters or less.

What does that mean for BMX?

The research studied running, so applying it to BMX requires coaching judgment. Here’s how I use the principle:

🚲 FLAT-GROUND STARTS
A BMX race usually begins on a downhill starting ramp, where gravity assists acceleration. Starting on flat ground removes that assistance—the rider has to generate the acceleration without the hill helping.

⚙️ BIGGER-GEAR SPRINTS
A higher gear than your usual race setup increases the crank torque required for the same driving force at the rear wheel. Use a purposeful increase that still allows an explosive start and controlled technique.

⛰️ INCLINE SPRINTS
Don’t want to swap gears? A suitable incline adds resistance while keeping your race gearing. Choose a slope that lets you accelerate strongly rather than grind through every pedal stroke.

🛷 SLED PUSHES & PULLS
These can complement on-bike work by developing force production during acceleration. They’re part of the toolbox alongside bike-specific practice.

🟨 SPRINTBLOCK STARTS
One tool I like is @sprintblock, which lets athletes practice their starting position and first pedal strokes away from the competition gate.

Credit to Australian BMX coach Sean Dwight, creator of the Sprintblock training method, whose coaching has supported world champions and Olympic medalists, including Olympic gold medalist Connor Fields.

The goal: short, powerful efforts, enough recovery to repeat them well, and resistance that matches the athlete’s needs. Keep race-gear sprints and actual gate practice in the plan.

More resistance isn’t automatically better. Build the ability to accelerate—and practice expressing it on the track.

Please let me know as soon as possible and I can receive messages either through Instagram or Messages, and please spread the word as much as possible so that I can show animals next year and the word of FFA’s Livestock Showmanship. Thank you again to whoever reads this, comes out to watch, or donates to my future Livestock animals, it means the world to me and the dedication this extracurricular takes
