PHOTOREAL 2026: The splendid light > Sunday 20 September at MAPh 📸✨

• Mirrored collage workshop with artist Grace Wood •

Drawing on Michelangelo Pistoletto’s iconic mirror works and Grace’s own use of mirrored Perspex and found photographic imagery, participants will experiment with layering, cutting and collage to create an image that shifts between representation and reflection. By leaving areas of the mirror exposed, each work will continually change according to its surroundings and the person looking at it.

🪩 Discover how reflection, found imagery and collage can be used to play with what an image reveals and conceals.
🪩 Create your own layered collage on mirrored Perspex, leaving parts of the reflective surface exposed so that you, your surroundings and changing light become part of the finished work.

Sunday 20 September at MAPh
11am to 12.30pm
$40 pp / $35 MAPh members + TarraWarra Museum of Art members
BOOK via link in bio
Check out all the other great speakers and workshops MAPh is running across our full-day symposium!

Grace is a finalist in this year's Bowness Photography Prize, for her work 'Petal as pixel', pictured. She is a Naarm-based artist working across photography, collage, textile and installation. Her practice explores the shifting life of images as they are found, removed from their original contexts, altered, layered and recirculated.

Grace Wood’s ‘Petal as Pixel’ at LON Gallery takes Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus’ (1888), a painting of guests being smothered beneath an avalanche of rose petals, and reimagines it for the digital age.

Suspended from the ceiling, hundreds of rose-gold mirrored panels drift like falling petals frozen in mid-air. As they slowly rotate, they reveal collaged photographs sourced from the internet: bouquets, beauty products, celebrities, fragments of bodies, fashion imagery, museum sculptures, roses upon roses upon roses. On the other side, rose-gold mirrored acrylic surfaces create reflections that multiply endlessly. Your reflection joins the endless circulation of pictures, consumption, and desire: images that are manufactured, replicated, altered, shared, and absorbed until their original meaning becomes impossible to locate.

There is a tension between attraction and excess. The colour pink dominates, carrying associations of love, femininity, luxury, softness, desire, and beauty. Yet Wood pushes these associations to a point where they become overwhelming, almost claustrophobic. The works seduce while simultaneously exhausting the viewer.

Along one wall, twelve mixed-media works partially obscure Alma-Tadema’s painting. Layers of flowers, sequins, resin, copper wire, found imagery, and photographic fragments perform a kind of visual burial. The original painting repeatedly disappears beneath new images, mirroring how contemporary culture continually overwrites itself. Drawing on Rachel Ruysch’s floral still lifes and fashion imagery, Wood allows flowers to multiply across the surface until beauty becomes recursive — images feeding upon images.

Wood repeatedly returns to the uneasy relationship between beauty and violence. Alma-Tadema’s painting depicts an act of lethal excess disguised as luxury. Wood extends this idea into the present, suggesting that contemporary image culture operates in a similar way. The endless stream of beautiful pictures appears harmless, even pleasurable, yet its sheer abundance can overwhelm, distract, and obscure reality.

Julia Aquilia Severa was a Roman Vestal Virgin who became the second and fourth wife of Emperor Elagabalus. Their marriage in 220 CE caused a scandal because it violated strict vows of chastity. It was later annulled, only for the Emperor to remarry her. The couple remained remarried until the Emperor was assassinated in 222 CE. They produced no children, and her fate following his assassination remains unknown.

Grace Wood’s solo exhibition, ‘Petal as Pixel’, continues at LON Gallery from Wednesday to Saturday from 12-5pm, until the 27th of June.

To request a catalogue of works from the exhibition, please contact the gallery via email or DM.

“For Petal as Pixel, Wood has spliced and collaged the images digitally, originally sourced from internet searches of the term ‘rose’. Typically associated with love, prestige, and purity, Wood is indiscriminate in her selection. Not all the source images or collages are standardly beautiful, many allude to the absurd. Visual flickers of rosacea and beauty products are embroiled with rose coloured objects, decorations and high fashion, all steeped in sickly sweet composites of pink.” - Nikita Holcombe

Continuing in the gallery this week: Grace Wood’s solo exhibition, ‘Petal as Pixel’. We’ll be here from Wed to Sat 12pm - 5pm.

The exhibition draws on Wood’s enduring fascination with Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s, ‘The Roses of Heliogabalus (1888)’, employing it as a metaphor to reimagine seduction, excess, and the proliferation of images through a contemporary lens.

Montage upon montage upon montage is how I would see Grace’s exhibition, Petal as Pixel @longallery. Immerse yourself in her installation and become part of the artwork. A garden of delicious rose pink mirrors reflecting your image and what surrounds you. Flower petals multiplying & twirling, luscious images seductively drawing you in. Touch them, twirl them, love them. You won’t be disappointed .
