When you assemble a thing as beautiful as this romantic four-poster bed, you do not waste the opportunity to dress it. Adorned with trefoil carvings and linen fold panelling, this one is not to be missed. Along with a Napoleon III bergère, French demilune table, and two perfect nesting stools in the Jacobean manner, the scene is set. This time, we have completed the vignette with some wonderful assistance: bed linen from @senecatextiles_nz, our beloved Frank Table Lamp from @collierwebb, a chromed "Wiskemann" teaset c. 1930 from @europeanantiquesnz, a stunning ceramic work by @georgiaahood (represented by @grace_aotearoa), and the Te Hā blanket from @noablanketco.

We never imagined Blue to be the back drop for a fashion show but it was an honour to be asked and very special for us to be able to host the two women behind @harris_tapper that we admire so much! "The Saône river lines the historic centre of Lyon, flowing from north to south before merging with the Rhône at the point of confluence. This terrain forms the presqu’île — a peninsula that has shaped the city’s colonial and commercial history. Rising from the Saône, into the ancient hill of Fourvière, we witness the fragmented notes of a painting conservator, who suffers amnesia after coming into close contact with a spirited, 19th-century painting." ⋇⊶⊰⊱⊷⋇ (August, 1838 is a draft scene from a longer work of speculative fiction. The installation, Souconna, presents a scenographic reconstruction of the bedroom in which the films protagonist sleeps and dreams. Within the oneiric space : a silvered Nuphar Lutea (conjured from the Saône river), three framed gum bichromate prints of riverine vegetation and flora around the Saône river and Fourvière area, and a vase turned from Robinia pseudoacacia — a tree introduced to France from North America in 1601, long misidentified as a species of Acacia ; the source of gum arabic.) Artist: Alex Laurie What do you do? I’m a sculptor and I work in lots of different media, it’s all interesting to me. What could you imagine doing if you didn’t do what you do? I think a mechanic, or possibly an apprentice train mechanic who works at MOTAT? Although I am a bit wary of my own steampunk leanings… What images are pinned to your studio wall? I don’t have pictures pinned in my studio. Although in my bedroom, I have a small section of the perforated foil from Reception (Blue Oyster 2025) that hangs on map pins and behaves like a barometer for how draughty it is. I also have part of an Arnott’s cheeseboard box showing the different shapes on the back of my door. The first artwork that made an impact on you? I couldn’t find the work after a quick search, as results are flooded with the Eliasson ice cube — which I did help maintain over the summer. It was another melting work from the Auckland Art Gallery’s old Lorne St site. Such a long time ago now, but if memory serves, it played random sounds and was totally absorbing for an outwardly plain thing. Who is your ideal studio buddy? Somebody who can hold me accountable for my mess. I’ll be buried otherwise. What are you listening to? Kraftwerk – Vitamin What are you reading? We All Hear Stories in the Dark by Robert Shearman, it’s like a Sheherazade-style ‘choose your own short story’ collection in three volumes. Thousands of pages… It’s taking forever. An artist (living or dead) you would like to meet? Lulou Margarine. She has a consistently enigmatic practice that I’ve followed for years. There’s something in the tone, the titling, that is relatable to me and very stark. I think of Time of Day (2017), close-up photos of a microwave clock, a house fly sometimes imposing itself. What did you learn at art school? Self-belief! I’m still chronically shy, but it was worse. What’s next? I have been working toward a solo presentation at @grace_aotearoa that opens July 4th. We are pleased to hear about the recent acquisition for The Grace Collection of Tim Wagg's work 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘵 and 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 from his 2024 exhibition 𝘙𝘪𝘴𝘬 at Grace in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. "The Grace Collection acquires significant art and taonga for future generations in Aotearoa New Zealand. Held in public-trust and administered by Grace, the Collection aims to support and preserve the work of artists practicing in Aotearoa today. Through the acquisition of significant artworks, the Collection will ensure a public record of the Grace exhibition programme. Funded by the Gallery and in partnership with gifting patrons, the Grace Collection will celebrate the shared value of art." News: Grace announces representation of Eleanor Cooper. Eleanor Cooper is an artist who likes wild places and their stories. Her work explores natural and cultural history, ecology and language. Originally from Tāmaki Makaurau, she lived aboard a small yacht for two years and has recently moved ashore to Porirua to plant a garden. Recent exhibitions include A Fire that Blackened the Rocks at Te Atamira (2024), Shipwreck at Paper Anniversary (2023), They covered the house in stories at Te Tuhi (2021), Greywater at Mokopōpaki (2020) and Bouquet at Blue Oyster (2020). She holds a Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Auckland.
