I’ve got endless things to say in honor of september but to spare @kaelyncs the tears, I’ll just leave it at this. I love my friends, I love this place, and holy shit I sure am lucky that I get to explore this place with my friends every single day. Thank you, september, for providing a time and place for walking across mountains with packs bigger than ourselves, Milky Way bonfires, visits from momma, running uphill for 8 hours (for fun?), and end of season cleaning and dancing and laughing. September, you’ll always be famous and I love you forever.

I would’ve stayed out there another 4 days if it meant one more driftwood bonfire with Fred drying his socks only for them to get wet again first thing the next morning / perpetually nervous we would run out of whiskey before we ran out of alders to run head first into, tangled paddles and wobbly legs / a 55-lb pack full of two blocks of cheese, even more salami, and a raft that was a constant reminder of the relief to come on day 5 when we lined up like little jellybeans down the Matanuska. Our tents froze the final night, all bundled in puffies and fleece pants the next morning while we sipped coffee, drowsy, bruised, and smiling. I would have stayed out there another 4 days if it meant I could hold onto these people forever. We all wanted it, sure, to finish this ambitious route, but it’s the awe and love of this place shared by 18 people that I couldn’t help but weep over under Milky Way stars and an impromptu meteor shower. I’d give it all up to do it all again. Four years, and I have barely begun to process what I will do without the constant thrum of movement, noise, joy. A bit of me along every little trip we’ve wandered, from my first camping on Inside Slate and backpacking to the little green Bomber Hut, to the towering scree of Donoho and now here between glaciers, under passes, alongside the lumbering steps of mothers and cubs. I would have stayed out there another 4 days / My friends’ joy is everything here / It always will be, and years from now, I’ll smile again as I imagine our long walk from glacier to glacier to river back to glacier.

Dear August,
You make my legs hurt but you are also my favorite, so I forgive you.

Hold on, I can’t see all this absolute magic without my $13 children’s sunglasses.
