#GraceyRipa @graceyripa

American painter Gracey Ripa explores expressive portraiture through layered oil paint and atmospheric brushwork. Influenced by femininity and elements of nature, the artist brings these themes together through a distinctive approach to painting.

After spending her early years in Southern California, Ripa was raised in Texas, where she developed an early connection to warmth and vibrancy. These influences would later become part of the visual sensibility surrounding her artistic practice.

Gracey Ripa at San Francisco Art Fair 2025. @graceyripa
As an artist, my work is grounded in the deep connections I form with the people I photograph, especially women, who have been a continual source of inspiration throughout my life. I believe in getting to know the subjects I paint beyond the surface, and through this process, I aim to capture the true essence of who they are.
My creative journey has shifted over time. While I began with surrealism, exploring imaginative worlds, my work has gradually transitioned to a softer, more ethereal style. Using acrylic paint, I now embrace a softer style. Inspiration comes from the delicate beauty in the world around me, whether in the quietude of nature or in the fleeting, meaningful moments I share with people. My art is a celebration of vulnerability, expression, and the power of human connection, inviting others to find something personal and reflective in the stories I tell through my work.

Although Abstract expressionism is what Clyfford Still is know for, it’s important to know the roots of an artist. I find peoples upbringing interesting as it often plays a role in an adults character and how they view the world.

Clyfford grew up in the rural area of Spokane and we can see the incorporation of his environment in his art. His art compromised of surreal human figures which we can see here. A few laborers hard at work. Perhaps the great depression and his struggles seeped into his color palette. What do you think of the vast difference between his early style and his break through to abstract expressionism?

I loved this painting for its “all over composition”. This phrase describes how the composition isn’t a singular focal point that we often see in traditional art.

“To be in the painting” is often used to describe the composition of abstract expressionism. The massive size transports you into it and I found my eyes moving around and viewing the painting as a whole.

The hint of light green in the right upper corner of this painting is very pleasing and ties the painting together. I also love the texture of the paint, which he applied with a trowel in different depths.

Music is an art and Clyfford Still was drawn to the beautiful sonatas of Beethoven. The composition of his music was vast and I admire how Clyfford found inspiration that translated onto canvas.

Although Clyfford Still resisted critique for the most part, there are some that don’t appreciate abstract expression. However, I don’t think art needs technicality to be qualified as “the best”. Art is subjective so there is no objective winner, and his style was groundbreaking.

I find abstract expressionism to work as a mirror. A few colors can certainly create a mood or reflect what you are feeling. Sometimes with traditional art and a focused focal point, meaning is created as the artist paints their art. With abstract expressionism the meanings are limitless.
