There’s so much bad hanging around lately. Do you feel it in the air & everywhere? The AI data centers. The weather. The food insecurity. The wars. The children who.are.still.dying.every.day.in.Gaza. And, there’s the looming, heavy fear of what-will-happen-next. This morning, as I fed my son steamed spinach disguised in a sweet mash of ripe pears, I smiled at him through a sea of hot tears. I am, like so many, overwhelmed. We cleaned up and headed to the bookshop for storytime. He fell asleep in his dad’s arms while a group of 10 babies & their caregivers sang a healing storytime staple: “Tall Trees, Warm Fire.” After the last stroller left the shop for the day, and with Roman curled up asleep on the rug, I read through all of the picturebooks I added to the shelves. There’s so much said and unsaid in picturebook pages; they seem to hold the whole world inside their big covers. There’s grief and wonder and confusion and possibility and joy … & there is so much hope.

While so much of the world seems intent on making life smaller, easier but harder & colder, we can still make choices, every single day, that will make our little corner of it warmer & more alive. You can buy your pears and spinach from the Farmer’s Market. Support artists & listen to live music. Create. Donate. Be aware. Show up in and for your community. Support your local farms, restaurants, shops, and cafes. Read the books. Sing the songs. Feed the babies. Hold them close.

It won’t fix all the things. Perhaps not even a little bit. I do know that. But it will help us remember what and who we’re fighting for. And, if you get a chance, open up a picturebook, and let it remind you that hope is not naïve… it’s something we can actually make, together, every day. If we choose to.
