This crew officially wrapped up training and headed home this week! 👏🐾

Over the past two weeks, they built stronger habits, better impulse control, and the confidence to make better choices in everyday situations. The progress from day one to graduation was incredible, and we’re excited to see these pups continue thriving with their families.

Wednesday With Wyatt🦙
Today is the 5th anniversary of The Trampoline. A 16-second video with a complicated storyline involving a Dad and Mom, a boss, a Grandpa, and, of course, a girl. Follow along:
Boy comes home from caring for his boss’s property. He immediately tells Dad he was blowing leaves and that he walked across the “old and brittle” trampoline, which tore. No worries, he informed his boss of the accidental damage and ordered the replacement mat.

Dad sorta thinks something is peculiar, but instead of asking more questions, chooses to give himself a mental gold star for being the driving force behind his son’s newfound maturity.

Weeks later: Dad is in bed investigating Boy’s phone. [Brown House rule: Mom and Dad pay the bills and reserve the right to inspect kids’ phones at any time.] During the audit, Dad discovers a folder called “Hidden.” Dad opens the not-so-hidden folder that contains a single video of a teenage boy in overalls and boots, attempting a massive jump, and falling through the middle of a trampoline. Dad sits straight up in bed and shows Mom, then resists the urge to go yank Boy from his slumber.

No, there’s a better plan. Dad quickly texts the video to himself, saves it, and patiently waits for the PERFECT Dad moment to catch a liar!!

More time passes: Dad and Mom run into Girl’s Grandpa, who also happens to be Boy’s tennis lessons coach. He says, “Hey, did Wyatt tell you I talked to him? Yeah, me and Gracie were cracking up at that trampoline video he texted her, and when he called, I convinced her to let me answer her phone...” Ha ha ha, laughs had by all. Dad and Mom fuming but holding composure. Mystery solved.

The rest of the story is: Boy and Girl were FaceTiming as he passed by the trampoline and said he could do a backflip. Girls says, “Betcha can’t do it in workboots.”

I never had that perfect Dad, GOTCHA, moment. Add it to the “Wyatt Got the Last Laugh” list. We included the clip at the end of his celebration-of-life video, but not before I exposed the little liar to his boss the night before.

The story and these 16 seconds are why that Boy is still endearing to us all.

Wednesday With Wyatt

Wyatt was deeply inspired by song. He’d pull the family into a room and insist we listen to something that had consumed him. We’d also hear him, in his room, yelling from the shower, “Alexa, play...on Spotify. NO! Alexa, I said PLAY...,” followed by the sound of a shower curtain being yanked back and wet feet clomping across the floor.

For a unique perspective, we asked his friend Gracie to share today.

“Wyatt loved music. It was a way that he communicated with me and many others. It was a way that he could express how he felt, no matter the situation. On Wednesdays, we called it “wisdom with Wyatt.” That was when he would pull up a scripture or send me a song. We would listen to it together on FaceTime and talk about what it meant to each of us. Wyatt would always give his “wisdom,” which was often wiser than I could come up with, even though I wouldn’t admit it to him at the time.

Wyatt used music to share his love for the Lord in a lot of ways. Our favorite songs to listen to together were “All You Ever Did” by Kandi Peterson, “Revelation Song” by Kari Jobe Carnes, and his absolute favorite out of our three favorites was “Out of Hiding (Father’s Song)” by Steffany Gretzinger. He adored this song. The tone of her voice, her delivery of the song, but most importantly, the words she sang. He always looked deeper into the words. He would sit there with his eyes closed and just listen. He was always good at that. Just listening. I think music was one of the things that taught him to listen to the words others had to say. At least, that’s what he always told me.

Music was a way that both of us loved to connect to our feelings, our emotions, our thoughts articulated outwardly, but also just a way of communication towards each other and other people. Wyatt has such a love for music, as do I. His love for music rubbed off on me in a way that helped me connect with myself, with him, with God. He showed me how to just listen to the words that were being said through songs.”

There’s that recurring theme again: Slowing down. Take time to listen. Connect. The boy was on to something.
