Rapidly putting this together before I go to my second shift of the day and lose the idea but Jane Remover is implicated in the Chaotic Good revelations and this piece by @tape.wounds reminded me SOOO much of one of the primary theses of Joe Jackson's memoir that was written 30 years prior. I read it in 2023 and it massively informed my aesthetic philosophy and beliefs about the purpose of music and my responsibility as a lover of art. The revelation that popular artists are artificially buying engagement reveals that very little has changed. I have been thinking a lot about how algorithms inform our tastes in music and fashion. In the age of AI, discernment has only become more essential and more difficult. The @tape.wounds points about artists selling themselves as a brand is also incredibly reminiscent of Jane's own creative work, and their most recent tour announcement contains a title and imagery that I believe further play on the paradox of self-commodification under late stage capitalism. Really interesting stuff, I hope I still have the mojo to write about it when finals are over. I have been a jane remover fan for an extremely long time and I am disappointed because I think she was on track to develop this level of audience organically. In retrospect, there were suspect instagram reels that came across my fyp during the initial REVENGESEEKERZ album cycle that I should have thought about more deeply before interacting with. This is a reminder to myself and other music lovers to stay skeptical 🩷 and discerning 🩷 and less willing to be impressed 🩷

Donald Trump is threatening 100% tariffs on Canadian goods over what he’s calling a Canadian “deal” with China — but the facts don’t line up. After a weekend of confusing Truth Social posts from Donald Trump, folks may have been left with the impression that Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a free-trade agreement with China. He didn’t. Canada agreed to narrowly lower tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for relief on Canadian agricultural exports — far short of a free-trade deal, and fully within Canada’s rights under CUSMA. So what’s really going on here? A policy flip-flop, a looming CUSMA renegotiation, and Trump using tariff threats as leverage — again. This is MediaLLit. I’m Kieran Oudshoorn, breaking down what was said, what actually happened, and why the distinction matters.
