SUTA.

This past summer has been an unbelievable journey and a massive privilege. I couldn’t be more grateful to share thousands of memories with this group of 5 and especially this group of 18. Thank you @jacob_warren930 & @evan_magill for pressuring me to audition and practice every year, it would’ve been such a disappointment if I didn’t march this year because man I had fun. The vibe cannot be matched and MAN we were piss. I am BLESSED to have three more years. It only gets better from here. AHOO

Huge thanks to my dear friend and UNT colleague @ericwillie1 for an incredible residency @UVA this week!

Eric brought so much energy to our 19-member ensemble, from coaching rehearsals to:✅ Performing the Virginia premiere of Hollow Horizon by @austinkeckcomposer ✅ Playing a mallet duet “Carousel” by Double Image with me—our first time sharing a stage since PASIC 2010!
✅ Premiering a new work he composed to solo with the ensemble.✅ Laying down the groove on drum set for our Brazilian finale, “Banho de Folhas”(arr. @mckayla_p).

But the talent didn’t stop there—we also featured incredible works by our very own alumni, @craigthered12 and @cameron_church_music. Our students also proved they can do it all. We had ensemble members switching between percussion, piano, and electric bass, and even a vocal feature by @danielbburbano singing in Portuguese for our finale! I am very proud of our ensemble for tackling Varèse’s “Ionisation.” It is a notoriously challenging, legendary piece, and the students played it with incredible focus and heart. It was a special night for our graduating 4th-years, too—premiering a new percussion quartet by one of their own @daiwingmusic. What an unforgettable way to wrap up the year... I couldn’t be prouder.

Thank you @artofchicho for capturing our sound with your beautiful drawing! Thanks to everyone who makes this concert possible and to all the audience attended in person and online!
