Helloooo everyone ! I am making this post for one of my best friends Graham.. Graham had a bad accident while skiing in the backcountry of Japan on January 15th, where he snapped his femur. I am beyond grateful it wasn’t worse but it still resulted in over five hours of being dragged out of the mountains by Search and Rescue. I started a go fund me page to help my pal out in this stressful time, as travel insurance does not cover Search and Rescue in Japan and he is having to buy a last minute flight back to Canada. 🫶🏻 Graham is a phenomenal friend and he deserves to have a bit of help in this shitty time. A rescue, a first for me.
Don’t panic, easier when you don’t know the person.
Kengo heard it from his friend around 1:30. We can’t ride that run because there’s an injury he said.. bummer. At the time we didn’t think much of it. Side country wasn’t that aside. About an hour later his friend calls back. He’s been asked by someone on scene to come help or send help. We’d just gotten off the top chair and we’re about to take our final run for the day. His femur was broken. I immediately went through the very short list of what was in my resort pack. My first aid kit, couple ski straps my poles, and a water bottle. I was wearing all my layers. Kengo and Jacob just had layers and poles too. Kengo went into the lift shack and asked for help, they said they couldn’t, wouldn’t even let us borrow any rope or gear. “This is Japan” kengo said to me frustrated. We decide to go with what we had. Very little gear, minimal training, no real life experience, but a will and motivation to help.
When we got on scene they had him off the snow and covered up but nothing else. I gave him some of my ibp and began to cover him up more, give him warm tea some chocolate and asked him some questions. I padded his broken leg around the injury and used his poles on either side. Used what rope we had to tie his legs together. Then we made a pad for search and rescue. They arrived about 45 minutes later. Between that a solo boarder that happened to be a Tylenol 👼 was riding by and became a helpful addition to the team. Search and rescue do their thing like the pros they are. We get him on a sled and make a track down the slope. We got him out just as it’s getting dark and the storm had another pulse.
Even though there was a language barrier the team work was a huge attribute to making this rescue go smooth and get the victim to safety before the ambulance arrived.
I’m grateful for today and for S&R. I learned a lot and was reminded that even if you’re inbounds or in side country you should always be packed and prepared for any situation. It might save someone’s life whether they’re your best friend or a complete stranger.
