PINK TRASH 🎀 @bampfa by @marenhassinger 💗(1982/ 2026)

Invited to first perform the piece in 1982 as part of artist David Hammons’ Art Across the Park public art series, Hassinger made a simple yet powerful intervention into the problem of trash in public parks. As with many of her works, Pink Trash addresses humans’ relationship to the natural world, finding ways to confront the loss of nature, which the artist calls the most pressing issue of our time.

Dressed head to toe in pink, Hassinger traversed three New York City parks, slowly dropping trash that she had painted pink across their lawns. A practice in color theory, the brightly hued pink of the trash sharply contrasted with the lush green of the park’s grass, bringing new visibility to the scattered trash we have become accustomed to walk past.

Today was only the third iteration of the performance, and the first time that Hassinger performed the piece alongside other performers, in this case an amazing group of UC Berkeley Students: Ruby Bartlett, Belladonna Davis, Sofia Kozlova, Jenny Nguyen, and Nora Yang. Thank you to the Environmental Arts and Humanities Initiative Entanglement Series for co-sponsoring today’s performance.

Thank you to our team @bampfa especially curatorial assistant Omar Jason Farah @omarjasonfarah for bringing the magic ☀️ and to co-curator @grahamrecently Sean Carson, Eleanor Holland, Dave Taylor, Roseli Ilano @roseliilano 💖🎀💅🏼🌸👛👚🩷🦩🎟️👙🩰

Yesterday we opened Maren Hassinger: Living Moving Growing @bampfa 🌱🪢💖
It has been a dream to realize this exhibition of an artist whose works have transformed me since I first saw them — to bring her pieces together and allow for connections across her practice, tell her story, and ultimately assert her dynamic place in the history of contemporary art. And there has been no greater joy than to collaborate with so many on an exhibition, that would at its core showcase all of the ways that Maren has brought people together throughout her career.
My thanks to all (there are so many and my post is too long 😂) in the comments ⬇️✨
