Little needs to be said of Ulysses Grant’s Memoirs of the Civil War. They remain an indispensable classic of civil war first-person literature and probably the best memoir ever written by a US President. Here are two sets of the memoirs from my personal collection: the cloth bound and quarter leather bound editions. They are both first editions. Although Grant’s memoirs are not uncommon (especially in cloth), it can be difficult to find them in pristine condition. My cloth set in particular is in excellent condition.

Little also needs to be said about the heroic struggle Grant undertook to write his memoirs; that story has been told many times. The @grantcottage in New York does a wonderful job of telling that story if you haven’t heard it already, and I encourage you to visit that very special place as soon as you can.

Finally, the Grant memoirs are part of the “Shoulder Strap” series of books well-known to Civil War book collectors. I own eight of the ten in the series, but I am missing the two most elusive: the Winfield Scott Hancock book and the incredibly uncommon “Genesis of the Civil War” by Samuel Crawford. Someday.

Do you have any of the “Shoulder Strap” volumes?

A beautiful new way to experience the history and views at Grant Cottage!

A new accessible, paved pathway now leads to the historic Eastern Overlook on Mount McGregor, making this special place easier for visitors of all abilities to experience.

Grant Cottage is the final home of Civil War General and two-term President Ulysses S. Grant. While staying at the cottage in 1885, Grant completed his memoirs and visited the overlook one last time in his final days.

We’re proud that this project was made possible through the Park and Trail Partnership Grant Program alongside our partners at NY State Parks & Historic Sites, helping preserve New York’s public lands.

More than 140 years later, visitors can experience the same landscape that Grant treasured.

Another Saratoga in the books! ✅🐴 It was an amazing summer of sharing stories, soaking up the sun, and laughing alongside the best partner, Kenny Rader.

This was my eighth summer as the Saratoga Track Reporter and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to represent the station at the “Summer Place to Be.” 🎪 Meeting the viewers, making new friends & being reunited with familiar faces makes it the best assignment ever.

A huge thank you to @camhatsnyc & the lovely team at Encounter for getting me race day ready all meet long.

TIDBITS: In 1885, an ailing Ulysses S. Grant, former Union General and U.S. President, found comfort in reading letters sent to him from every corner of the nation. One such letter was written by ex-Confederate, A.M. Arnold of Virginia:

“I hope you will allow one who, when but a boy, laid down his arms at Appomattox and gave in his allegiance to the Union, to express his warmest sympathy for you in this your hour of affliction. Dear General, I have watched your movements from the hour you gave me my horse and sword and told me to go home and ‘assist in making a crop’—I have been proud to see the nation do you honor—And now, dear Genl in this the hour of your tribulation I weep that so brave, so magnanimous a soul must suffer as you do—My prayer to God daily is that you dear General, may be restored to perfect health. And be assured that I am not the only ex-confederate who sends his prayers daily to the throne of Grace for the restoration of the Grandest, the noblest the bravest Soldier and the Purest Statesman whoever graced the annals of history. May the God who overlooked you in battle and who has brought you thus far give you grace to meet whatever He has in store for you And may He Restore you to health & friends is the fervent prayer of one who at 16 years of age entered the lists against you and accepted the magnanimous terms you accorded us at Appomattox.”

In his final weeks, Grant affirmed how much letters like Arnold’s meant to him.

“I am… thankful… to see for myself the happy harmony that has sprung up between those engaged but a few short years ago in deadly conflict. It has been an inestimable blessing to me to hear the kind expression towards me… of Confederate and National troops alike.… I feel that we are on the eve of a new era, where there is to be a great harmony between the Federal and Confederate. I cannot stay to be a living witness to the correctness of this prophecy; but I feel within me that it is to be so.”

A beautiful path to a remarkable view.
We’ve always loved the overlook at Grant Cottage, and we were especially proud to have the opportunity to contribute to this historic property on Mount McGregor in Wilton.

The well-worn path through the woods had its own rustic charm, but the new tar and chip surface gives it a fresh, inviting finish while still feeling completely at home in its natural surroundings.

Winding through the trees toward that incredible view, it’s a wonderful example of how the right surface can improve a space without taking away from what makes it special.

We’re honored to have played a small part in the continued care of such an important local landmark.

And if you’ve never visited Grant Cottage, we highly recommend it. Take a walk to the overlook, enjoy the incredible view, and experience this remarkable piece of local and American history.

Have you taken a day trip to Grant Cottage yet?
📍Nestled on Mount McGregor (less than 10 miles from downtown Saratoga Springs!) this local treasure is an absolute must-visit for history lovers and view seekers.

Why I recommend it:

🕰 A Time Capsule: Ulysses S. Grant spent his final 5 weeks here in 1885 writing his memoirs to save his family from financial ruin. Everything inside remains frozen in time, including original furniture, his funeral floral arrangements, and the exact clock stopped at his time of death (8:08 AM).

⛰️ Unbeatable Views: The Eastern Overlook offers panoramic views across the Hudson Valley, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the southern Adirondacks.

🌲 Rich Mountain History: Beyond the cottage, Mount McGregor’s grounds have served as a Gilded Age luxury resort (Hotel Balmoral), a tuberculosis sanatorium, and most recently a state correctional facility.

Whether you’re looking for local Upstate NY history or just a scenic afternoon drive, put this one on your list!

On this day in 1864, Union General Ulysses S. Grant initiated the Deep Bottom Run campaign by transporting elements of three corps across the James River. The subsequent day saw attacks against Confederate fortifications. This campaign was part of Grant’s broader strategy to draw Confederate forces away from Petersburg and potentially capture Richmond.

Grant’s goal was to weaken the Confederate defenses around Petersburg and threaten the Confederate capital, Richmond.

Deep Bottom was a location on the James River, approximately 11 miles southeast of Richmond.

On August 13th, Grant moved parts of three Union corps (II, X, and Gregg’s cavalry division) across the James River at Deep Bottom Landing.
The next day, August 14th, Union forces launched attacks on Confederate fortifications, including New Market Heights and Fussell’s Mill.
The Confederates, led by General Robert E. Lee, responded with counterattacks, particularly at Fussell’s Mill, where they initially repulsed the Union advance.

The Deep Bottom campaign resulted in intense fighting and ultimately a stalemate. The Union forces withdrew from the area on August 20th, maintaining their bridgehead at Deep Bottom. #deepbottomrun #uscivilwar #civilwarhistory #ulyssessgrant #civilwarbattlefield

On Sunday I attended the @friendsofalbanyrural Annual Meeting where a presentation featuring Ben Kemp from the @grantcottage was delivered to a rapt audience.

Ben’s historical interpretation of Ulysses S. Grants delivery of a speech on an Independence Day (post Civil war and pre-Presidency) was simply amazing to hear.

The inclusion of actual Soldiers resting at @historicalbanyruralcemetery was quite poignant, and many more were mentioned, but sadly I neglected to tape more than what is featured within this clip.

If you’ve not yet experienced the Grant Cottage Historic site in Wilton I would highly recommend a visit.

#OTD August 8, 1885, the largest funeral in American history was heled for Ulysses S. Grant. One and a half million people crammed into New York City, which at the time had a population of 1.3 million, to say farewell to the most beloved person in America and the most popular man in the world.

Printed on banners and repeated in sermons throughout the day were Grant's campaign slogan and political north star, "Let us Have Peace" - a phrase that meant between North and South and Black and White during the war and expanded to mean peace on earth during his presidency (with his precedent setting use of International Arbitration) and during his three year world tour.

It's been a privilege to study and write about the later chapters of Grant's extraordinary life in my books "Ulysses’s Odyssey: Ulysses S. Grant’s World Tour at the Dawn of American Empire" & "Grant's Tomb: The Epic Death of Ulysses S. Grant and the Making of an American Pantheon"

AI can do something I never expected.
Not just bring history back to life—but bring people together.
My Summer with Sam began as an idea here in Israel. Along the way, it led to an unexpected collaboration with an American Ulysses S. Grant expert, who became my eyes on the ground at Mount McGregor.
He walks the original forest trails, captures drone footage, uncovers rare historical photographs, and sends them across an ocean.
I turn those photographs into visual references.
Those references become cinematic frames.
In this carousel you'll see a few examples: original historical photographs alongside their AI reconstructions.
For me, that's the real power of AI.
Not replacing history—but helping us reconstruct it with authenticity, research, and human collaboration.
The trailer has already received three Best Trailer awards in the general trailer category of various competitions (not AI), and the journey is only beginning.
Follow @2samsproductions if you'd like to come along.

Among the images in this carousel are the famous clock on the mantelpiece at Grant Cottage in Mount McGregor, which stopped at 8:08 a.m. on July 23, 1885—the moment of Ulysses S. Grant's death—followed by its cinematic AI reconstruction from the trailer.

You'll also see the authentic historical photograph of Harrison, Grant's devoted personal valet, standing beside Grant's empty chair after Grant's death, followed by the reconstruction of that same moment in the film.
