Spring into Auction! 🌿 Experience the beauty and tradition of hula with a special lesson from Kanoe Cazimero. This unique offering invites you to connect with culture, movement, and mana’o in an unforgettable way. Palapalai is one of the most traditional plants used in Hawaiian haku leis. The palapalai fern (Microlepia strigosa) holds deep cultural significance in Hawaii, primarily due to its role as a sacred plant in hula and its embodiment of the aloha spirit and connection to the land (‘āina). It is often referred to as a beloved, indigenous fern that connects past traditions to present practices. ——— Sacred to Laka (Goddess of Hula): Palapalai is considered a kinolau (physical manifestation) of Laka, the goddess of hula. Using it in lei is not merely decorative; it is a spiritual practice that brings the dancer closer to the deity. Hula Altar Adornment: It is one of the essential plants used to adorn the kuahu (hula altar) within the halau (hula school) to honor Laka. Symbolism in Performance: Palapalai is frequently used in lei po’o (head lei), lei ‘a’i (neck lei), and kupe’e (wrist/ankle bracelets) during traditional hula kahiko (ancient hula) performances. It adds a soft, airy texture that emphasizes the fluidity of the dance. ——— Respectful Harvesting Protocols: Gathering palapalai requires protocol, often involving oli (chants) and a deep respect for the forest, ensuring only what is needed is taken. Cultural Tradition: It represents the connection to the forest and the importance of malama (caring for) the land. ——— Bid now and explore more incredible items-new treasures are being added daily! The base image is laua’e fern, which usually has broader, more strap-like leaves. #fohbg #honolulubotanicalgardens #friendsofhonolulubotanicalgardens #hawaiinei @tootsiecaz
