As corny as it is, these two pictures were taken 11 years apart doing the exact same thing, saying goodbye. That younger, skinnier version of me on the left felt displaced after the venue I called home since I was 17 was abruptly uprooted. Paul not only resurrected this haven, he made it *better*. It’s a place where no matter what fringe or non mainstream you identified with, you were home. Without going into a ton of detail, I was experiencing some very real mental health issues last month and news about the pony closing did not help. For that reason this weekend was more than cathartic, it was uplifting. No matter if you played in a doofy little metalcore band like mine, crust punk, country, indie, thrash, sludge (whatever else) it was a moment of unity as much as it felt like a eulogy. Whether it was called “the Nile” or “the Pony” this basement fostered one of the most unique communities in Harrisonburg, and it’s not going away. Thank you Paul, Geoff, and everyone who ever worked here. I left some pics of my favorite moments playing here through the years, do me a favor and share some of yours.

Photo dump from running up on Vara Alta’s EP release at the Golden Pony! Huge thanks to all of you that encourage my debauchery. 🌺 #neverforfunction

Special Shout Outs:
1. Vara Alta - You guys are the best band brothers a bunch of poprock boys could ask for.
2. The Golden Pony & Geoff Snow and team- Thanks for not burning down and for enabling us respectively.
3. Uga Buga & To Be a King - Y’all are fucking rad. We’d love to pretend we’re hard and throw down again sometime.
4. Kyle Johnson (@mightyweirdbeard ) for these outstanding Live Photos 📸
5. Buc-ee’s - Because Buc-ee’s
6. Creepy 1970s child rearing books that definitely caused a great deal of generational trauma
7. Ceilings that are low enough for me to hang from
8. All our outstanding friends who find babysitters, over-consume caffeine, run lights, help carry equipment, and drive entirely too far to show us love. ❤️
