Grounded in Walter Benjamin’s essay The Task of the Translator and the lived experience of growing up between languages, Emily Nguyen’s senior thesis, Speak Nearby, visualizes the process of translation through the metaphor of fruit and skin. Developed at the Savannah College of Art and Design, the SCAD designer peels meaning from its original context to layer it into something foreign, hybrid, and completely new. Conceptual framework drawn from filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha meets the whimsical, androgynous aesthetic of Faye Wong, fusing avant-garde sensibilities with poetry-infused streetwear. Unfolding silhouettes evoke peeling fruit, brought to life through a hazy, muted color palette and a tactile mix of knits, plaid flannel, gauze over linen, brocade, corduroy, chiffon, and cotton twill. Speak Nearby invites us to step into the in-between, where language, identity, and garment continuously transform.
