> Les Rencontres Architecturales de Lomé (RAL #1)

In November 2024, the inaugural edition of Architecture Encounters (Les Rencontres Architecturales Africaines) was curated by Studio NEiDA at Palais de Lomé. Across two days architectural practitioners gave lectures, held two workshops, a film screening and three architecture tours.
The presentations took place in an abandoned structure sitting on the northern tip of the expansive botanical garden of Palais de Lomé, which itself is a stunning example of the power of architecture and the importance of reclaiming historically decayed buildings.

Reflecting on RAL#1 2024

Attending the first edition of Rencontres Architecturales de Lome (RAL#1), organized by the Palais de Lomé (@palaisdelome ) and Studio Neida (@studioneida), was an incredible experience!
From insightful presentations to hands-on workshops, every moment was a learning opportunity.

Highlights:
• Oluwafemi Hinson Yovo (Sah Studio): Archiving the Loss explored documenting West African architecture, merging generational styles to create innovative forms.
• Dominique Petit-Frère: Shining a spotlight on digitalizing and archiving of unfinished buildings across Africa.
• Nana Biamah-Ofosu: A deep dive into tropical modernism and its relevance, including modernist designs from my alma mater, KNUST. Her film is a must-see!
• Mallory Cohen: Fascinating insights into Hôtel de la Paix and its architectural drawings.
One thing that stood out? The strong representation of women at the conference. Truly inspiring!
I also loved the rammed earth workshop, where I asked tons of questions (as always). The facilitator’s patience and willingness to translate everything into English made it such a rewarding session.
To top it off, I had the honor of being part of the jury for the Architecture Photography Awards, reviewing stunning images of Lomé’s architectural landscape.
Grateful for this incredible experience and looking forward to seeing how RAL continues to grow!

A dear friend, Josias, guided me on how to make Rammed Earth bricks with natural clay, a variety of sand and a bit of concrete. I played further with this shared skill as a base for a warm night-lamp made from wood and folded paper screen (from an A3 page off my art book) and glue, to it. Quite simple and easy. The result is a wonderful, dimmed lamp that also beautifies the living space and brings warmth without being in conflict with the natural moonlight outdoors. Just the needed harmony one desires!

The desire to make this arose from my disdain for using bright LED white lights at any time of the day or night as I find that they stress the eyes and brain so much. You have to pay close attention and listen to your mind and body to tell the difference. Better to use a candle and fire lamp than blinding, toxic lights. Even in classrooms, all white lights need to be replaced with either natural sunlight or incandescent lights that aren’t toxic to the brain and create a warm glow. This encourages a harmonious environment to learn, socialise, reflect and simply rest. The moon, although so bright, it never blinds and you instantly feel at ease. So why should we go against this nature ? I wonder. Perhaps we are becoming too focused on goals— which is making us machinelike than true inner wellbeing ?

I’d love to work with more natural mediums, engage in more creative collaborations that produce genuinely sustainable outcomes and doesn’t contaminate the earth/ natural elements. There is so much beauty in this. So much joy. You appreciate the textures and never get tired of it. It gives back, in immense ways that you feel within. Because it is nature. And it is also you. And it makes one come alive through inspiration. It makes the irresponsible become responsible.

- Btw, I’m not sorry for expressing and blabbing “too much” lol 🤨😆

Apprentissage de la technique de construction en pisé.
Une technique qui vaut la peine d’être apprise et mise en œuvre. Elle permet en effet un réel confort thermique dans la maison et peu être pratiquée par tous.
