So here we go, I thought it was time for a bit of a refresh/reintroduction (along with my friends, hi friends!). Feel free to agree to disagree or stake your claim in the comments. What are the bookish hills you will expire on? Do we have any that are the same?

💗 This or That: Romance Tropes 💗

Our group chat reads a lot of the same books, but we definitely have *thoughts* about tropes!

Do you have any favorites among these tropes? Is there someone whose reading tastes match yours?

We talked about DNFs last time, it’s only fair to turn the table and talk about ARCs. Specifically, what they are and what they aren’t.

But wait, I already know what ARCs are, those are advance reader copies. I apply for them, they get sent if I’m accepted and then in exchange I review them. That’s what ARCs are.

What if we told you that’s only partly right? Read through and see what ARCs and ARC readers really are.

Have you been treating ARCs differently than you thought you had to? Which one surprised you the most? Tell me down in the comments!

I will never exploit another's trauma for my own gain or as a marketing strategy. Nor will I ever support others who do. Consent was stripped away once from them, let's not strip it away again.

DNF = Did Not Finish. But what does a DNF really mean for an ARC? It’s not what you think…

Sometimes as an ARC reader you come across a book that ticks all your boxes. All the tropes are your favorite, it’s the right setting, it’s got all the things you look for in a great book. So, it’s an automatic 5-star book, right?

It can be written well, but something isn’t clicking. You’re struggling to finish it even though it has everything you want in a book. It becomes clear…this book is not a match.
What do you do?

That’s where the DNF comes in.

DNF feedback can help authors and publishers in a lot of ways, like making changes before it goes to print or marketing the book to the appropriate audience. DNFing an ARC isn’t a moral failing, or something to feel guilty about. It’s an important part of the process.

The next time you DNF an ARC, don’t use it as a tool to bring someone down.
Use it as an opportunity to help a book be its best possible version.

What do you think? Does this change your mind about DNFs?

Fantasy readers, we want to hear from you. Are you the type to read the glossary, pronunciation guide, family tree, and lore before you dive in? Or do you white knuckle it and jump in while you desperately hope to catch up? Bonus points if you rename characters with whatever your brain says it is regardless of the very helpful pronunciation guide. (It’s pronounced Fay-er. Fight me.)

Let us know in the comments which camp you fall in!
