WATER MANAGEMENT IS ALWAYS A SYSTEM APPROACH

When it comes to window installations, it’s not a question of if water will find its way in, but when. The goal isn’t to assume we can prevent every drop of water from entering, but to design a system that manages it when it does.

In my latest article on @greenbuildingadvisor , I break down how the window rough opening should function as a drainage system, with multiple layers of protection working together to direct water back to the exterior.

Flashing details the #carpenteredition

I have had many question on these deep aluminum window flashings or exterior jamb extensions. With the head tape flashed to the zip sheathing it is 100% fuctional. The head and sill both have a 7 degree slope. The head is equipped with 1" end dams, this prevents water from traveling laterally and spilling down the side jambs, It forces water out away from the window.

Using a thermal image camera and hygrometer to indicate condensation and mold risk of indoor surfaces. Testo has had this feature for about a decade.

The number shown on the display is the approximate relative humidity of the thin layer of air immediately adjacent to the wall surface. 0-59% is good, indicated by the green color on the screen. 60%-79%, the yellow areas, indicate potential mold growth. The red areas are above 80% and show elevated risk areas.

If an area shows yellow or red, it may not mean condensation or mold are present, only that the risk is present. Further testing would be required.

Small houses are at a disadvantage when blower door testing and using the air change per hour at 50 Pascals (ACH50) metric. Thankfully there's another option, cfm/square foot of surface area. This metric began with the 2021 IECC (energy code). That code cycle allows homes under 1500 square feet that achieve less than .30 cfm/square foot of surface area to meet the intent of the air tightness requirement. If your area has not yet adopted the 2021 IECC codes (or the 2024 IECC), chat with your local building official, they may except this metric for small homes.

In case you were wondering, walnut cabinetry is one of our love languages 😍

Check out some interior shots from our recent build in Colorado. We combined modern industrial concrete floors (with included hydronic radiant heating) with the warmth of stained walnut and subtle organic paint hues. The end result is a design that blends elements of Japandi, midcentury modern, and minimalist. Overall, the project was designed and built with budget, functionality, and durability in mind.

A couple of exterior shots from our Colorado build that wrapped up in June 📸

We used a combination of natural and black-stained Western Red Cedar for the siding and soffits. We love how the front porch turned out completed wrapped in cedar, with a Douglas Fir post and beam - see the third photo. An added bonus is that the cedar smells incredible!

We’re missing the mountains and the wide open spaces now that we’re back home in Ohio, but we had an amazing time building this one, and we’re excited to share more about some upcoming projects very soon!

In Richmond-area homes over the last few months, Viridiant staff have measured duct leakage ranging from 4.5% to 38.7%.

It's money and comfort literally blown to the outside, and it creates an imbalance that pulls in hot humid air.

If you're wondering how to reduce energy costs and improve comfort and moisture management in your homes, getting an independent test of how your air ducts are performing is a great first step.
