🎨📖 @chaze SNDTRK1 "Painted Memories & Lost Negatives"
Just finished this book after meeting Chaze a few weeks back at the launch with @greencouchprojects at @wastestorelondon
Hearing him talk about the project made reading it hit even harder. For anyone into graffiti history, Chaze’s name carries real weight. Coming out of the Paris scene in the late 80s, he became known not just for painting trains and walls, but for documenting the culture from the inside through photography as well. His work feels raw and authentic because he genuinely lived that era rather than observing it from the outside.
One thing that stuck with me from meeting him was when we asked him what he preferred out of painting graffiti or taking photographs. His answer was just a cheeky smile followed by, “Painting with style, for sure.”
What makes SNDTRK1 hit differently is how personal it feels. The project started after Chaze rediscovered an old envelope of negatives while moving house, almost 30 years after police seized many of his photos and black books back in 1991. Rather than letting those memories disappear into the black hole of social networks, he turned them into this book.
It never feels over polished either, more like looking through someone’s memories than just a collection of graffiti flicks. Chaze says he wanted to share stories about his comrades, atmospheres, memories and moments from that era, and you really feel that throughout the book. Covering the years from 1984 to 2001, it captures way more than just graffiti. The influence of hip hop runs through the whole thing too. You can feel the music, style and energy tied into the culture throughout his journey.
There’s also newspaper clippings, scans of old posters, relics from the journey and interviews with real graffiti kings which all add serious depth. @teachdds contributed a spread about his friendship with Chaze too, and of course there’s photos of Teach’s infamous Green Couch. IYKYK
