J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)
(First known performance)
Green Day live at the 924 Gilman Street, Berkeley, California , 18/11/1992.

The very first live performance of Green Day’s “J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)” took place on November 18, 1992, at the historic 924 Gilman Street venue in Berkeley, California.
The song was written in memory of a dear childhood friend of the band, specifically of bassist Mike Dirnt, named Jason Andrew Relva, who died in a car accident in April of that same year.
Although the song was not officially released until 1995, as part of the soundtrack for the film “Angus”,and later on the 2001 compilation “International Superhits!”, Green Day was already performing it live during that period within the underground punk scene.
In May 2019, a user and long-time Green Day fan (Todd) finally digitized the original tape of the entire evening and shared it publicly on YouTube and community forums.
Although there is no accompanying video, the audio from November 18th is a treasure for fans; in addition to “J.A.R.,” the band performed several songs live for the very first time tracks that would go on to become iconic, including “Basket Case,” “Longview,” “Burnout,” and “Having a Blast.”

I am now the owner of Mike Dirnt’s iconic American Idiot touring bass. In 2005, Mike played this bass at my very first rock concert of any kind, when I was 9 years old. 21 years later, it’s in my hands and I can hardly believe it!

Mike painted this bass himself, then used it in ~193 Green Day shows (by my best count) across 22 countries and 4 continents, from the very first time American Idiot material was performed publicly to the very last show of the American Idiot tours.

It appears prominently in Green Day’s Bullet in a Bible live concert film, and was played at the 47th Grammy Awards, VH1 Storytellers, Saturday Night Live, Late Show with David Letterman (twice!), Top of the Pops, Billboard Music Awards, BRIT Awards, and the MTV Australia VMAs, just to name a few.

I’ve easily spent hundreds of hours of my life watching and/or listening to this bass across various live footage and TV appearances. I have numerous books and magazines that feature this bass which I’ve collected since my childhood. To me, in my own little world of music, this is the single most iconic bass guitar in existence. It’s the first bass that’s image I grasped on to. To me, it’s THE bass.

I feel so honored to be giving it a home. It’ll be preserved (and played!) as long as I live.

(P.S. It’s now my mission to reunite this bass with Billie’s matching ’56 LP Jr. from the same era, if anyone is ever able to make that happen… 😊)

Greenday - Nice Guys Finish Last drum cover

“Nice Guys Finish Last” is the opening track from Green Day’s 1997 album *Nimrod*. The song takes a sarcastic look at a world where kindness is often overlooked while selfish and ruthless people get ahead. With its sharp lyrics and relentless energy, it captures the frustration of realizing that playing fair does not always lead to a fair outcome.

BAND IVE SEEN

Was waiting to make this since I came back home
I didn’t expect to put @pinheadgunpowder in my list this year, I’m still honestly overwhelmed by what happened
I passed from staying locked at home to fly miles away from home just for this fucking music, and once again it saved my life

This may also be a little sneak peek from the project I’m working on from this trip.

For those who are new around here “Band I’ve seen” is a prompt I’m following to make designs for all the mainstream bands I’ve seen live in those years.

The album version I used as a reference is from this reissue by @1234gorecords , the label that released the band’s latest albums and has reissued their entire discography, with a few minor variations in some tracks, as is the case here. 💿
