✂️ “I have always been an artist,” says @gregorbecker.studio (Gregor Becker). “And a few years ago I decided to make it my life.” Drawing on his background as a gardener and landscape architect, Gregor explores paper as a living substance, constructing his work out of countless pieces of it, carefully placed to create a three-dimensional service that transforms with the light of day. His creative process is thoughtful, deliberate and never rushed. “The first thing I had to leave behind was the idea of the instant,” says Gregor. “Outside my window there is a tree that has been growing for a hundred and fifty years, and it is beautiful because of that. I work at that pace.” Using tweezers, he places each hand-painted piece one at a time, working without a grid or template, intuitively deciding where each piece belongs as the work takes shape.

“I did not learn this technique; I built it up from scratch and it is inseparable from the artist who made it,” shares Gregor. “It is a language before it is a technique, and a language is not a set of instructions. It grows out of who you are and how you look at the world, and it can only be spoken by the one it belongs to.” 🌳

I had the pleasure of meeting Gregor, who showed me his home-studio in Soriano.

He is one of those people you simply cannot forget, because there is something so pure about his soul.

When he showed me his studio, made of thousands of hand-painted pieces of paper, each one hand-cut and carefully fitted together to create mosaics, I thought it was completely crazy — but incredibly magical.

I think the love he puts into this art reflects the person he is. Being around him gives you a deep sense of calm — the same kind of patience and stillness it must take to create a mosaic like this, piece by piece.

I love you, Greg. I’m so happy our paths crossed. 🤍

✨ When Paper Begins to Catch the Light

German artist Gregor Becker (@gregorbecker.studio) creates unusual mosaics from thousands of hand-painted pieces of paper. He places each element with tweezers at a carefully chosen angle, allowing the surface to shift with the light and with the viewer’s movement.
His art is closely connected to metamodernism: the ancient technique of mosaic takes on a new form, while the work itself exists somewhere between painting and sculpture.

✨ Kâğıt Işığı Yakalamaya Başladığında

Alman sanatçı Gregor Becker (@gregorbecker.studio), elle boyanmış binlerce küçük kâğıt parçasından sıra dışı mozaikler yaratıyor. Her parçayı cımbızla belirli bir açıyla yerleştiriyor; böylece eserin yüzeyi ışıkla ve izleyicinin hareketiyle birlikte değişiyor.
