The undisputed uk garage legend that is MJ Cole needs absolutely no introduction. A true master of his craft through producing, djing and engineering, he is uk garage's golden child. There will be a series of posts for MJ as there is just too many good tracks. We're starting with 1997-1998, his first couple of years in uk garage. Let me know in the comments! ✍️🔽 __________________________ Matthew James Firth Coleman, better known as MJ Cole, is a British DJ, producer and classically trained musician widely regarded as one of the defining figures in UK garage. Raised in West London, he studied piano and oboe before completing a music degree at City University. After working as a sound engineer for drum and bass label SOUR, he began experimenting with electronic production, developing a distinctive take on 2-step garage. His breakthrough came with ‘Sincere’, first released in 1998, which combined intricate percussion, soulful vocals and warm chords to become one of the genre’s most recognisable records. The success of ‘Sincere’ led to his self-titled debut album in 2000 on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label. The record earned Mercury Prize and BRIT Award nominations, while Cole won a MOBO Award for Best Producer. His follow-up, Cut to the Chase (2003), expanded his sound through collaborations with artists including Jill Scott and Elephant Man. Alongside his own releases, he became a sought-after remixer and producer, working with artists such as Mary J. Blige, Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal and Wiley. He also explored different styles through aliases including Matlok and Box Clever. Cole has continued to move between garage, house, R&B and more experimental music. His later work includes MJ Cole Presents Madrugada (2020), which revisited his classical influences, alongside collaborations with newer generations of UK artists. Through his blend of musical sophistication and club-focused rhythms, Cole helped bring UK garage to a wider audience while maintaining a lasting influence on the genre’s evolution.
