“Maternity care deserts are popping up left and right.”

Dr. Francesca Turner is an OB-GYN at Iowa’s Broadlawns Medical Center. She says in her 19 years in Iowa, the lack of access to birthing hospitals, obstetric care, and obstetric providers has gone from bad to worse.

And it’s about to become more disastrous.

That’s because in July, President Trump ended the federal Grad PLUS loan program and capped medical school student loan debt at $200,000. The median full cost to attend four years of medical school is just under $300,000.

At Broadlawns, Turner oversees medical students who are taking an obstetrics rotation, typically during their third year.

She predicts caps will push students into higher-paying specialities to manage their debt, steering them away from obstetrics and rural service. That’s if they can afford to go to medical school at all.
