Gen Z Spotlight: Lea Greub

b. 1998 Germany. Based in Berlin and Tbilisi

'I have a contradictory relationship with the word ‘belonging.’ My roots are in Germany, and I feel connected to the place, my loved ones there, and also partially to the culture. At the same time, I condemn many of the political decisions that my homeland represents, the norms and values that are widespread, and the privileges that are exploited without reflection. Because of this, I often feel disconnected and find it hard to stay there.'

Freedom of art and science cannot be taken for granted—it requires open societies, the rule of law, and strong, transformative institutions. This is what the campaign ›Vorsicht Demokratie!‹ (›Caution: Democracy!‹) stands for, which launched at Berlin Art Week 2025 with its first posters, institutional partners, and a kick-off event in Berlin.

This year, just in time for the 15th anniversary edition of Berlin Art Week, further artists and institutions are joining the campaign.

Read more about the initiative on our website.

The ›Vorsicht Demokratie!‹ collaboration format was initiated by ›Werkstatt Der Bevölkerung‹ and Berlin Art Week I Kulturprojekte Berlin.

From 9—13 SEP 2026, Berlin Art Week brings together the city’s contemporary art scene with exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and talks across Berlin.

„WAS TUN WIR. Bilder in Zeiten zerfallender Gewissheiten“

My heart is still so heavy. My thoughts are with everyone who was hurt on Saturday, and with the family and loved ones of the woman who was killed. No one should have to carry this.

This attack sits on the same continuum of violence that queer people in Germany live with every day. We cannot tolerate that it’s already being co-opted by people who have never cared about our safety, who are using it to validate racism and Islamophobia.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Saturday an attack on people “peacefully celebrating,” language that flattens Pride into a harmless party and erases its history as protest. The same government that has cut funding for queer projects and refused to fly the rainbow flag over the Bundestag during Pride is now positioning itself as our defender.

We won’t let our grief be used by people who only want our safety as a talking point. And we won’t let you weaponize our pain.

Thank you to @stella_schalamon for talking to me and five other wonderful queer people for @zeitmagazin and to @greuble for these wonderful, captivating portraits, for capturing a moment we won’t forget.

stay safe and stay proud🫂🌈🕊️

We are delighted to announce that Lea Greub has been shortlisted for the 2026 Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award!

Based between Berlin and Tbilisi, Greub is a documentary photographer whose work explores socio-political issues through the lenses of migration, borders, belonging, displacement, and queer-feminist perspectives. Working across long-term documentary projects, she examines how political change and social inequality shape everyday life and communities throughout Europe.

Lea has been shortlisted for ‘De la gare à la mer’, an ongoing project exploring queer lives in Marseille and the ways experiences of belonging, visibility and safety are shaped by migration, race, and displacement. Beginning in Berlin and tracing connections between the two cities, the project examines Marseille’s reputation as a refuge for queer communities while investigating the realities behind that perception.

Set against a backdrop of rising far-right politics and increasing social polarisation across Europe, the work reflects on a moment in which queer rights and safe spaces can no longer be taken for granted. Through intimate documentary photography, Greub explores how communities create belonging and resilience in the face of uncertainty and change.

Following an extensive review process, we are delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2026 Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award!

We would like to thank every woman photographer who submitted work this year. The calibre of applications was exceptionally high, reflecting the dedication, ambition and commitment required to sustain long-term documentary projects. It has been a privilege to see such a diverse range of stories from photographers working across communities around the world.

Established in 2017 in honour of photographer Marilyn Stafford, the Award was created to support women documentary photographers and champion visual storytelling that engages with pressing social, environmental, economic, and cultural issues. Now in its tenth edition, it continues to provide funding and international recognition for projects that explore the complexities of contemporary life through long-form documentary practice.

This year’s shortlist reflects the breadth of contemporary documentary photography, exploring themes including cultural identity, migration, environmental change, community resilience, youth experience, health, and social justice. Together these projects demonstrate photography’s ability to deepen understanding and bring visibility to important stories that might otherwise remain unseen.
