I don’t enjoy living in the DC area, which is no surprise to the people on here who know me. That said, there are some benefits—one of which is that I live very close to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center. If you go there after 1600, then parking is free and you have 1.5 hours to check out the their excellent examples of both historic and contemporary aircraft.

The museum recently took possession of an F-117 Nighthawk, tail number 85-0818, which went on display this week. A release from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum states “the F-117A joining the museum’s collection is nicknamed ‘The Overachiever,’ and it was the only F-117 flown in all four major conflicts in which Nighthawks flew combat operations: Operation Just Cause (Panama, 1989), Operation Desert Storm (Iraq, 1991), Operation Allied Force (Yugoslavia, 1999) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq, 2003).” Very cool. The Air Force ‘retired’ the F-117 years ago, but many airframes continue to fly out of Tonopah Test Range…

For anyone who might be interested in the history of the first low-observable aircraft, I highly recommend ‘Stealth: The Secret Contest to Invent Invisible Aircraft’ by Peter Westwick. Lockheed and Northrop took two very different approaches to end up at the same goal.

And then no visit to Udvar-Hazy Center is complete without taking a few minutes to pay homage to the SR-71, tail number 972, so I took some shots of that beauty as well.

For the watch, I opted for the Tudor Pelagos Zulu Time on the @grey.area.co x @watcheswinwars strap.
