📍: Thaiger (Grey Lynn, Auckland) 🇳🇿

At this point, I think my main hobby this year has been travelling between Auckland and Hamilton 😂 Someone needs to start giving me frequent flyer points for the number of times I’ve made this trip. 💀

Was up in Auckland for a conference, so naturally the academic development had to be balanced with some food exploration. 🍽️ Marcus and I finally made it to @thaiger.nz Thaiger, which had been sitting on my list for a while! ⭐️

Gai Yang ($34.90) was a great start, with marinated grilled chicken thigh, som tum salad, sticky rice and dipping sauce. The chicken was full of flavour, and the sticky rice and salad made it a really satisfying meal. 🍗🍚🇹🇭

Thaiger Pad Thai ($32.90) was a good one too, with chicken, prawns and their house made tamarind and palm sugar sauce bringing that classic sweet and sour flavour. A solid plate of Pad Thai that hit the spot! 🍜

Thai Unicorn Milk Tea ($13) because apparently attending a conference isn’t enough of a reason to feel like a responsible adult 😂 Fun, sweet and a nice little treat to finish things off. 🦄

Overall, really enjoyed the food, the vibes were lovely and service was good too. Another spot ticked off the Auckland food list, and another perfectly valid reason to keep commuting between cities. My wallet would like to submit a formal complaint 😭😋

What role do local institutions play in shaping a suburb’s identity?

After more than two decades on Richmond Road, The Gypsy Tea Room is preparing to close its current chapter. Before it does, we sat down with co-owner Brett Simeti to reflect on community, hospitality, and what makes Grey Lynn different.

“A lot of people have memories here because life happened here. It’s beyond bricks and mortar.”

From first dates that turned into marriages to generations of locals gathering around familiar tables, The Gypsy Tea Room became more than a venue, it became part of the neighbourhood itself.

Meet your neighbour: La Buvette ☕️

A new café has quietly opened its doors on Richmond Road, but La Buvette is about more than coffee and croissants.

Carefully curated throughout the space are works from the personal collection of local artist Chris Corson-Scott, featuring photographs of Grey Lynn and Ponsonby spanning the decades - a reflection of the neighbourhood that inspired the venue.

For co-founder Romain, Grey Lynn stood out because it’s “a village in a city” - a place where people still know their neighbours and support local businesses.

His vision for La Buvette?

“A place of life. A place where people are happy to stay.”

We sat down with Romain to talk about community, hospitality, and why Grey Lynn felt like the perfect place to put down roots.

Award winning @cassia_auckland has announced a residency within @ozonecoffeenz in the Grey Lynn hood.

Launching 17 June, Cassia will take over evenings at Ozone while its new flagship restaurant in Auckland’s CBD is completed.

The residency brings one of New Zealand’s most celebrated dining experiences into the neighbourhood, with a menu featuring Cassia favourites alongside special collaborations, including an Ozone coffee ganache chocolate kulfi and an Ozone x Cassia chicken kebab.

It’s another reminder of what makes Grey Lynn special - a place where great hospitality, local character and community continue to come together.

We’ll be catching up with the Cassia team soon to learn more about what attracted them to Grey Lynn and their thoughts on the role hospitality plays in shaping local communities.
