Beetle Bailey cartoonist, Hi and Lois writer. Just trying to create a few smiles.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Day Three at the National Cartoonists Society 80th Annual Reuben Awards in Columbus, Ohio. I met so many amazing people, and let me tell you…I still pinch myself that I have this job! So many pics were taken, so I’m rolling out these posts like @suprdee2 taught us lol
—It’s the Reuben Awards!!
—Wayno of Bizarro *sigh* I started as his editor, and now he’s one of my greatest friends. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he’s as cool as he looks. I love you so much, Wayno! PS-we planned our outfits lol
—I met Jim Davis of Garfield!
—Francis Bonnet does Suburban Fairytales AND is an artist for Archie comics. He quickly became a friend, and he and his family have an invite to stay with us for an Orlando visit. Alex is creeping again 😒
—Brian Walker of Hi and Lois!
—Jim, Amy and I can’t stop, won’t stop 🤘🏻
—The KF team
—Kelsey and Amy ❤️
—Bill and Mary Janocha. Mary sat next to me at the King Features dinner, and we hit it off. Her husband Bill worked with Mort Walker for years. The stories this man has and the contributions he’s made to comics make him a treasure
—Jeff Keane of Family Circus
—Jim Keefe again. He insisted on being in at least 30% of the pics or he’d add hard-to-find typos in the Sally Forth text 🙄
—Alex, Ryan and I went to a HUGE bookstore…top-three best ever. Ryan just started at King, and he’s awesome. I enjoyed getting to know him
—Remember what Greg Walker said? The last two pics are for you, @grgwalker lol

Day One at the National Cartoonists Society 80th Annual Reuben Awards in Columbus, Ohio. I met so many amazing people, and let me tell you…I still pinch myself that I have this job! So many pics were taken, so I’m rolling out these posts like @suprdee2 taught us lol
—Ricardo is the creator of Goomer, and he had his first nomination AND he won for Online Comic Short Form. That is his wife Hazel, and she is simply fabulous
—Greg Walker of Beetle Bailey was the first artist I hung with in Ohio, and the first thing he said to me was “you’re the one who makes all the funny faces in pictures.” Yes, Greg-that would be me lol
—Amy is the Editorial Director at King Features, and before she was a hot shot ED, she was my very good friend. She is the best travel buddy!!
—We met up with Alex Garcia, who is the Director of Direct-to-Consumer. The artists love him because his energy and support of every single comic of King Features is contagious. The artists feel his love.
—Amy’s drink had a legit bubble of smoke. She’s fancy like that 💅🏻

Over the weekend Mort Walker, creator of legendary comic strips Beetle Bailey, Boner’s Ark (don’t snicker, I hear you!) and with partner Dik Browne Hi and Lois, passed away at the age of 94.
In his early days, he had another comic strip at the age of 15 for the local paper in Kansas City, then worked for the Hallmark Brothers (aka Hallmark cards) as their editorial designer, ditching cute and cuddly for gag cartoons. He in fact did serve in the military during WWII in Italy, working in intelligence and ran a POW camp for German soldiers. He later created the Museum of Cartoon Art now in Boca Raton Florida.
It is because of comic strips that nurtured my need to draw from an early age. Forget the rest of that Sunday paper; I wanted the funny pages. You can see from my first picture how much of a fan I was; I’d buy any novelization of the strips from the paperback section of my local department store.
Day in, day out Mort’s style was instantly recognizable. His way of taking curves for legs in motion, putting Sarge’s toothy mouth to the side, an angry glare were so simple and yet completely full of energy and emotion.
Fortunately his sons Greg and Brian will carry on his work since 1950 (that’s 68 years if you’re not counting!) will continue the work that shed the foibles of day in and outs of the military for Private Bailey, and Beetle’s sister Lois will continue raising her three kids with her husband for a long time to come, so we will still be graced with their presence in an ever-shrinking newspaper industry.
Finally, I want to mention I got to meet Mort at the first ever NY Comicon, and talked for a few minutes with him; he was extremely kind and grateful I had been reading since I was small. I still have his autograph tucked away safely.
Mort will be missed greatly by me and many other artists and readers alike.

🇺🇸Here’s a project from a few years back that I still take great pride in: my 3D sculpt of Beetle Bailey, known in Brazil as Recruta Zero — one of the most iconic comic strip characters ever created.

Bringing this classic by Mort Walker into the 3D world was a nostalgic and super fun experience. I aimed to capture his lazy charm, his iconic expressions, and that unmistakable “I’d rather be napping” attitude we all remember from the comics.

🎨 Original 3D sculpt
🕰️ Created a few years ago, still one of my personal favorites
📚 Based on the classic comic strip style

It’s always special revisiting pieces like this that helped shape my artistic journey.

👀 Did you enjoy this classic character?
Let me know in the comments which old-school comic strip character you’d like to see in 3D next!

Karen and I had a bodacious time at Beetle Bailey’s 75th Birthday Celebration at the Hearst Tower in New York City last week! Congratulations to my friends Brian, Greg and Neal Walker and their incredible late father, the one and only Mort Walker, the great cartoonist who started it all! Thank you, King Features! #happybirthday #beetlebailey #snuffysmith #barneygoogle #kingfeaturessyndicate #comicskingdom #comics @comicskingdom

Even back in 1956, Beetle Bailey had the same career goal many of us secretly share… just wanting out. Some things never change. 😉 #ClassicComics #BeetleBailey
